Bought to use for some gigs where higher volumes were not needed. Stock speaker is weak. Replaced it with a Fender/Eminence speaker from a Deluxe Reverb. No more bottom end farts, and the high end cleaned up as well. Many different voices, but only one useable for me: the Tweed Deluxe. Strong bottom and nice Fendery highs, with a slightly scooped mid translates into a really pretty clean tone.

This amp has great clean sound. It sounds like a fender twin reverb. The overdrive and distortion tones are also good. It goes from slight overdrive to searing metal distortion. The effects are also high quality. I'd imagine this amp to be great for recording. But it is all around. It can be used for jamming, practicing, and recording. The speaker seems to be average. Maybe it is quite cheap but it sounds ok.

Channel 1/Fender Twin Reverb model emulated on the Champion 40(as well as the 100W)was built to replicate the "power sag and pushback" we get as players when the tubes are hot and the pick is really diggin' in. This is something you don't expect to see on a full solid state combo, especially in the medium power range. Fender has nailed this to the "T," and with that reverb and delay setting on the DSP effects rotary switch, it is hard to get the smile off your face. It is also my view that Fender has perfected their tone emulation of the Super Reverb and the Princeton amps, both of which are also represented on Channel #2. The British 60's(VOX)model definitely provides the compression that the tube-version EL84 Class A amps are known for, but so much so that the output is a bit thin and you need to compensate by manually increasing your gain. One that is done, you're back to the British Invasion again. The 70's and 80's British amp models provide what I would describe to be more like a Tube Screamer or heavy OD; certainly nothing like a Marshall amp ultra gain channel output! The Achilles heel of this amp rests only with the choice of speaker and in spite of the improvements in manufacturing quality in the new Indonesian factory, some remain. I hit a G cord out of the box and promptly got out the acetone to remove the threadlock on the studs that are used to mount the 12" no-name speaker to the inside of the baffle board. If you do not do this step, you risk stripping the stud out of the baffle board when you put your socket on the nut to back it off. A Jensen ceramic C12N 50W 12" is what replaced the Fender OEM, and even with an additional $55 at wholesale cost added to the mix, I can't say enough about how convincing this little combo is. I have played this modded version now side-by-side with a 2X12 Celestion V30 and Fender Stage 100 head, and it will hold it's own. Having an auxilliary input for CD player and a headphone out on the front panel are nice touches for quiet practice and play alongs to your favorite music. No nylon amp covers are yet available, so lookup Custom Amp Covers here on eBay and get a really nice neavy vinyl cover with canvas liner if you plan to gig small clubs or churches, which are a perfect match for this amp. The infamous footswitch is also not yet available in the newer style with the solid gray metal ends, however Fender P/N 007-1359-000 works great and is the same unit for the FM65DSP and the Super Champ XD. There is no effects loop, but with the assortment available on the DSP, I can't see a need for one in this power class. I'd like to see Fender put the Celestion Rocket 50 speaker in this combo, which I think would be a great match and more affordable than a Jensen ceramic for most players on a budget.Read full review
This is a rerrific buy for a small amp. It has enough power for both practice and small venue use. And it has features found in more expensive amps! Gotta love it!

Not only is this amp the lightest one I've ever owned with a 12" speaker but it sounds great! I bought a 2 button foot pedal to change from clean to lead channel and off & on special effects. This amp sounds and works excellent with plenty of power to play with a small band. I definitely recommend this amp to anyone who doesn't need a huge amplifier!
