Fabulous series that kepts us wanting more. I purchased the complete series of "lost" with the package sealed....but when we finished Season 4, episode 14 (part 2) and started to watch season 5, episode 1, we both felt like we were missing something, so we went online and found season 4, episode (part 3). Not sure why this episode would be missing from a completely sealed item, but we are sure it came from the manufacturer this way, just giving a heads up.

I'm enjoying full sets of TV series I missed while working hard and bought this one because different reviews praised it as one of the (if not the) best TV series ever produced. I'm only deep into Season One so far but am finding it increasingly difficult to understand these glowing reviews. Answering "yes" and "no" to the review questions is tricky. Yes, it's basically "OK" and yes, I'll continue watching it but so much of it is incredibly lame and the dialogue for the most part is excruciating soapbox drama hack. I've actually found myself fast-forwarding a few scenes where the bathos is too much to sit through. I'm convinced by now that this won't be a shelf-keeper to watch again but I'm sure it'll keep me relatively entertained for the duration and then I'll pass it on!

LOST is a drama series that follows the lives of various individuals and groups of people, most importantly the survivors of the crash of a commercial passenger jet flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean. The story is told in a heavily serialized manner. Episodes typically feature a primary storyline on the island, as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life. Episodes of LOST include a number of mysterious elements ascribed to science fiction or supernatural phenomena. The creators of the series refer to these elements as composing the mythology of the series, and they formed the basis of fan speculation. The show's mythological elements include a "Monster" that roams the island, a mysterious group of inhabitants the survivors call "The Others," a scientific organization called the Dharma Initiative that placed several research stations on the island, a sequence of numbers that frequently appears in the lives of the characters in the past, present and future, and personal connections (synchronicity) between the characters they are often unaware of. This is quite possibly the only series in television history that includes a synopsis known as a "flash-sideways", as opposed to a "flash-forward". The show earned 55 Emmy nominations during its 6-year run, winning 11 total awards. It was also recognized with nods from the Golden Globes, Golden Reels, Satellite Awards, Saturn awards, Television Critics Association, Teen Choice and Writers Guild of America, among others. All 6 seasons were released as individual volumes on DVD, as well as the entire series in this massive 37-disc boxed set. Bonus materials include audio commentaries with cast and crew, deleted scenes, bloopers, outtakes and bonus featurettes. Oh! What could have been... and yet still a monumental achievement! My only regret is that the original concept of LOST never reached fruition. Cuse and Lindeloff's original plan was to create a 10 Season show with interactive DVD and website compliment for the truly devoted. Alas, changes in the nature of seasonal programming and the looming writer's strike before Season 2 launched created a void which "lost" a large portion of the Season one audience. FOX Broadcasting, understanding their 4th place network position, projected dropoff due to Baseball World Series programming, and demographic stress fostered by CW tried a radical approach by launching regular "Fall" shows over Summer (First with Veronica Mars then, the following year with The OC)... the results were outstanding and caused a backlash with 2 of the other 3 Majors (CBS the exception) which saw ratings dropoff in Fall. They tried to copy the HIATUS approach FOX employed by staggering their regular seasons into 2 or 3 "parts". ABC's choice to do that with the fledgling LOST was a disaster! Coupled with the original idea format of a "second plot thread": the "Tail Section" survivors as the focus of Season 2... and the "fringe audience" that had swelled in the middle of Season 1 became "LOST" in the shuffle and quit watching. Ratings slumped, and ABC (knowing the Writer's Strike was a real possiblitiy) circled the wagons and threatened termination. LOST's producers countered with a viable solution... trim the "fat", eliminate many current plot development lines (and killing off several characters), restructure the show to finish in 6 Seasons, use captioned reruns an hour before a first run episode thereby re-focusing the audience by "tying" the threads together in a more simple manner. It worked! By the end of Season 3 the monetum was rebuilding and the increase pace of Season 4 cemented the deal. The writer/producers had several potential "endings" that had been formulated before the show ever launched... so they chose the most expedient ones that would still retain the mythology and worked out the rewrites that led to the curious, thought provoking, if not totally satisfying ending... just imagine if they'd been able to tie together 10 seasons of plot/counterplot without interuption. Too bad in this ADD world of Smartphones and Android apps a sophisticated audience did not get that final reward. The DVD set... also re-worked in the face of the changes forced by ABC is STILL an EXCEPTIONAL achievement.... as was the use of Captioned Re-runs initiated after Season 2 to recapture the audience, explain anomalies, enrich the mystique, and clarify plot lines... the DVD special features and interactive captioning will help viewers that may feel that the program itself may be too daunting to attempt. While I never received this item (for reasons I won't disclose), I was looking forward to owning it. The entire series is one of the most intellectually sophisticated series to come out of Hollywood in a long time. But the cast was also engaging and many characters were sympathetic. Enjoying the (controversial) series finale requires you to be familiar with some of the ethical, metaphysical, and arguably spiritual, elements of the saga...familiarity that presupposes that you had some appreciation of some of the character developments and their issues from the previous seasons. Having the set as a whole also provides the viewer a chance to ponder the big issues that were raised over the series (such as freedom, whether or not human beings can be a "means to an end," is vengence ever justified, is there such a thing as "destiny" or a purpose to life). It gives the genuine "Lost" fan a chance to think about those issues a second time and see character development that might have got lost in the details.Read full review
