Excellent plug-and-play wifi adapter for Linux

If you are using a Linux system this adapter with the Mediatek chipset just works -- no driver installs or special software needed -- plug-and-play all the way! A great upgrade from the slow and unreliable internal Atheros wifi in my laptop, with 2 streams versus one to support up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz.

  • Great for Linux with Monitor Mode in latest kernel version (in-kernel driver)

These may be problematic for linux kernel version below 4.19, they work great for anything above that. Good for kismet as well. Get Ubuntu 18.04, ukuu to update kernel, then go crazy. They basically plug and play in Windows too.

  • Great adapter, terrible cable

The included USB 3.0 docking cable lacks the 5th pin that appears standard in my other 3.0 cables. The issue seems common if you search the model number for issues and I have yet to hear back from the manufacturer regarding the issue. Nevertheless, a single $5 6ft extension cable was all I needed for simple plug n play functionality on a Linux Kernel 5.3 with the mt76x2u driver. No issues further issues with my wireless network experiments. If you run into any issues at first, just check `journalctf --catalog ---pager-end --priority=4` or `journalctf -xep4` for shorthand and dmesg works as well. Any issues will immediately show up on your system's log, just grep for anything containing 'usb 3'

  • Excellent WiFi adapter for Linux

Awesome USB WIFI adapter (a/b/g/n/ac) that works on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Very stable on Linux using native kernels, no need for compiling external drivers. This adapter can do monitor mode and packet injection perfectly.

  • Great for Ubuntu

I am working on a project that will require me to have a spare notebook for a few months, and I really did not want to go out and buy one for such a short-term need. I reworked my wife's old HP Pavilion to an Ubuntu machine, and discovered that the wireless card in that particular model had no driver available. I did some reading, and discovered that this usb adapter would work right out of the box. It was inexpensive, it arrived quickly, and it worked immediately. This has really saved us a time and money.
