Classic Starrett quality. Managed to get a great deal because mine needed a rebuild and rust removal. Quality shows through when you can take something that neglected and easily refurbish it. That said, it has a few confusing design quirks. The vernier scale is only held in place with screws so it can loosen and slide a bit out of place if you're not paying attention. With the precision manufacturing across all the rest of the components, I can't see why they don't locate this properly with pins. This potential loss of precision angle calibration could be easily managed if it wasn't for the second design issue: the straight edges do not line up in the same plane when it is set to 0 degrees. You end up with a ~.0075" offset of 2 parallel edges. If you put it down on a flat surface the movable straight edge can tilt up or down a bit. If these landed in the same plane, you could just set on a flat surface and check the vernier still reads 0. As it is, you need a precision angle block or a shim to check the vernier.Read full review
