About this product

Product Information

Based on the book TYPHOID MARY: CAPTIVE TO THE PUBLIC'S HEATH by Judith Walzer Leavitt, this television program tells the fascinating story of an Irish immigrant persecuted for carrying an infectious disease in the early 20th century. In 1906, when an outbreak of Typhoid Fever, a bacterial disease normally found in poverty-stricken slums, occurred in the home of a rich Long Island family, the disease was traced to a cook named Mary Mallon. Though she appeared to be in good health, Mallon seemed to leave a trail of typhoid cases behind her everywhere she went. Forced to undergo tests, Mallon was diagnosed as a healthy carrier of the disease, earning her the nickname "Typhoid Mary." Seen as a hazard to public health, Mallon was quarantined to an island in New York's East River, where she was treated like a criminal. Years later, after being let loose, Mallon shocked the world by returning to cooking. When a typhoid outbreak occurred at New York City's Sloane Hospital, it was traced to Mallon, who was working as head cook under a false name. Mallon was put back in quarantine, where she eventually died, having spent 29 years of her life in complete isolation. The debate still continues as to whether Mallon was a criminal or a victim of the public health system. After years of being mistreated and labeled a monster, Mallon had few choices. While she was ordered not to cook, she was offered no training for a comparable career. Part biography, and part social history, THE MOST DANGEROUS WOMAN IN AMERICA: TYPHOID MARY examines the extraordinary societal reaction to the threat of illness.
