Reggae Report (V.14 #7 1996, p.41) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - Good - "...A grab bag of tunes from harmony groups that serves as a series of snapshots of some of the major singers and styles of the idiom....Don't look to A HISTORY OF JAMAICAN VOCAL HARMONY: THE GREAT REGGAE TRIOS for a history lesson, but it's a good place to get some introduction."

As "histories" go, this is rather scant, with 11 tracks licensed from the Heartbeat, Greensleeves, and Blood & Fire labels, and little in the way of liner notes. For someone who wants just a taste of reggae harmony around, though, it's all right, with cuts by Black Uhuru, the Mighty Diamonds, the Meditations, Culture, the Gladiators, Israel Vibration, the Abyssinians, and others. Of special interest is the Paragons' "Tide is High," which was covered by Blondie in 1980 for a number one hit. ~ Richie Unterberger
