  • This remake of the silent J'Accuse surpasses the original - absolutely stunning.

An excellent and highly accurate criticism of the stupidity and futility of war in general, but especially World War I and the soon-to-come World War II. The film's release in 1938 presaged what was about to happen, and it is interesting to view from the French perspective. The use of actually maimed WWI veterans near the end, as the dead rise up en masse to "teach" the new generations about the folly of the previous war, is genuinely moving and beautiful in a totally horrific, disturbing way. That may sound contradictory, but it's not. The faces of those men - what's left of them - as they stare into the camera will shake your soul. A film that isn't easy to forget, and deserves to be remembered throughout history.
