About this product

Product Information

Former engineer Shane Carruth announces himself as a force to watch with PRIMER, his first film. Carruth wrote, directed, edited, produced, photographed, scored, and stars in the film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. He plays Aaron, who, with his business partner and best friend, Abe (David Sullivan), experiments with a device that seems to have more power than they could ever have imagined. Playing with batteries, refrigeration, and other techniques and materials in Aaron's garage, they discover that their machine just might have the ability to move back in time. Originally dealing with Weebles figures and wristwatches, Aaron and Abe are soon considering making a box large enough to transport a human being--with remarkable results. An indie hit, PRIMER was made for about $7,000. Carruth shot the film with a purposefully grainy look, as if it were made in the 1970s. The retro feel works well with the futuristic elements of the story, which lead Abe and Aaron to question reality, truth, and their own physical and mental being. Because he learned about film on his own without going to film school or making any previous shorts, Carruth brings a freshness to the genre that is invigorating, with unexpected plot twists and complex narratives that invite multiple viewings. PRIMER is an unusual, unique, challenging, and thoroughly entertaining movie.

Wait... what? The plot will keep you confused.

One of the best first effort, no budget films I have ever seen. The director and actor commentary was interesting and informitive, Primer it is a good watch for would be filmakers and example of what can be acheived with almost nothing.

  • Don't Worry, Everyone is Confused...

One word. Unbelievable. Excellent. Outstanding. Okay that's three words. This is what one guy (one very talented and bright guy), with a few friends and 7 grand can do. Something that big budget Hollywood can't. Create a good thought provoking thriller. No wonder this movie won the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. The story seems easy to understand, two engineers, Abe and Aaron, are working on theories and concepts in Aaron's garage. All the while creating, they are trying to get published and recognized. They try to create one invention for one thing, believe it becomes another, and actually becomes a way of time travel. In between all of the engineer jargon you can see the possiblities beging to gell around the story. Trying to understand this movie after watching it ...

  • Very clever, unconventional sci-fi!

I loved this movie, although I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone. If you prefer big budget, over-the-top action movies with a sci-fi backdrop; this movie is NOT for you. This is a more cerebral, low-budget job directed by one of the main actors/characters in the movie. This guy was extremely clever in how he put the movie together--the special features section covering how he did it was also very entertaining to me. The movie also entailed a very original take on the whole "time travel paradox" thing. There is very little real action in it, but the plot is deliciously difficult to decipher--especially ahead of time (this rarely happens to me when watching a movie, and is the main reason--besides the price, of course--that I bought it!). If you decide to watch it, don't miss even a ...

  • Primer on DVD - 2 Thumbs Up

I love this film! Such a complicated and in-depth dive into time travel. Shane Carruth is a genius! His writing, acting, directing, and composing in Primer is impressive. I was happy to find the DVD on ebay, as it is no longer in print elsewhere.
