The 1970s was kinda like a "Black Hole" for science fiction movies, that was until Star Wars came along. I remember seeing this movie as a kid when my parents took me to see "Star Wars" and "The Black Hole" as a double feature at the local drive in. Remember Drive Ins? While everyone else was trying to make a "Star Wars" rip off, Disney did something else. A simple story, this one follows the crew of the spaceship USS Palomino as they are returning home from a research mission, only to run by a huge Black Hole and right next to it, defying the massive gravity is a lost ship the USS Cygnus which had disappeared 20 years earlier. When they go in to investigate, their ship is damaged and they have to board the Cygnus which is run by a both brilliant and mad scientist. But the Cygnus has more than a mad scientist with robots on board, it also carries a dark secret. It's a very entertaining film, and certainly for the time a major achievement. Released in 1979, It was nominated for two Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. It was Disney's first PG rated film, and certainly a good break from the "Star Wars" rip offs that everyone else was making at the time. In addition you have very good performances from the whole cast. Lots of action, and it's not only a good sci fi movie, but also a good family film. While the effects may be a little dated, I think it's a good contender with films made today which are so FX oriented.Read full review
The Black Hole is either a film you like or don't like. I happen to really enjoy it as a throwback to the science fiction matinee films of the 1950s. It's a testament to a bygone era, and a "last hurrah" to this sort of old fashioned film. This DisneyDVD is the best release of the film. The picture looks fantastic, and the sound is right on. Everything about the presentation is excellent. The colors appear brighter and the blacks deeper than on the Anchor Bay release, which was slightly softer in overall picture quality. This one looks razor sharp upon my first examination. Bonus features include a newly shot featurette about the special effects, and the trailer. Not much, but the featurette is well done and worth watching. Still would have been nice to get something more than that. If you don't like the film, this DVD will not change your opinion of it, but if you do like it, then you should pick up this release.Read full review
This movie came out when I was a kid and I loved it then. I got this DVD mostly out of nostalgia, but watching it again I do think this movie was under-appreciated in its day. The effects are generally good for the time, the story is at least internally consistent, and with the exception of the action sequence theme the music is really excellent. There were a number of Sci-Fi movies that came out in the late 70s following the success of Star Wars, and I would argue that this is one of the better ones.
It is great shape when I got it ! The movies brote me back to me child hood when I watch it !

I liked Disney's Black Hole, but it doesn't have closed captaining for hard of the hearing.

This movie is from 1979, when sci-fi movies like Star Wars, Silent Running and Battlestar Galactica where fighting for prestige in Hollywood. Many people do not know that this movie is from Disney. The facts of the Black Hole, the acting, the cast and the F/X are definitely superb! The F/X for the lasers and space explosions are easily compared to Star Wars at that time. A Classical Disney movie where there's always a good and bad side. This movie version from 2002 has the 2 formats Wide & Full screen, a collector's booklet, the trailer and a photos gallery.

The viewer needs to put a lot of imagination into this movie to get a lot of entertainment out. This is no high-tech sci-fi flick, but can be fun in it's innocence; Sort of like "Lost in Space", Will Robinson.
