The Woman On Pier 13 ’49 – Offers Suspense and Technical Quality
This rather strange title hides a ruthless expose of murderous waterfront mobsters –not unlike ‘On The Waterfront’ of a few years later. While some today won’t appreciate the Communist scare themes treated ‘up front’ in this quality production, there will be others who may still remember threats posed by deadly Communist spies just a few years earlier during WW11. Perhaps this film is even on target for certain leanings currently being ‘soft-peddled’ within sections of today’s youth – many who have little knowledge of the Communist wars and violence of the 50s. Whatever your stand on the politics behind this film – what can’t be denied is the high quality in all aspects of motion picture production. All performances are top grade, from the leads through the smallest of the supporting cast ... All performances are top grade, from the leads through the smallest of the supporting cast (some may not appreciate John Agar but here, he acquits himself reasonably). Direction by British born Robert Stevenson (one of the industry’s most successful directors of all time - Jane Eyre ‘43) is exemplary. As is the superb work by prolific and inventive but shamefully overlooked, Hungarian born master director of photography, Nicholas Musuraca (Out of the Past ’47) - lighting and production design are quite dazzling. The script, regardless of your political leanings, is filled with sharp dialogue, moves rapidly & never strays off course (even though a couple of situations may seem obvious or heavy handed to some) Dramatic music score by Leigh Harline suits perfectly. Robert Ryan has rarely been better; Laraine Day and Janis Carter are as convincing as they are glamorous. Some of the portrayed violence should leave a sick feeling in the gut of sensitive viewers, even by today’s standards. What this film deals with & delivers, within its non-stop 70mins, would take two hours + in today’s cinema language. This little gem should not be missed by lovers of 40s movie dramas. Note; The original title “I Married A Communist” was a hopeless throwaway. The only other performer of the day, who could have taken on the role of the head henchman and convinced as successfully as the marvellous Thomas Gomes, would have been Edward G Robinson (these two greats appeared together one year later in ‘Key Largo’) The local Aust TV print is poorly cut and needs replacing – clocking in at only 65mins.
