About this product

Product Information

Rachel's school project on Canadian symbols illuminates a unique national identity From their languages to the flag, from their money to the Mounties, Canada has many unique characteristics. That's Very Canadian is an examination--and celebration--of what makes Canadians so, well...Canadian. From the multi-award-winning dynamic duo that brought us Wow Canada comes a brand new title on a Canadian theme for kids. That's Very Canadian explores the symbols and icons--both official and unofficial--of this unique country and culture. Topics include the story behind how the country came to have its name, how Canada came to have the noble beaver as a national symbol, the bilingual nature of Canada--from Quebec street signs to cereal boxes--and how the two official languages have merged to form distinctly Canadian words, tasty treats from across the country: maple syrup, poutine, Macintosh apples, donuts, dulse, pemmican, and fiddleheads, idiosyncrasies of Canadian spelling, pronunciation and word usage, including vocabulary such as deke, toque and the ubiquitous eh?. A valuable resource for students needing straightforward information on Canada's national, provincial, and territorial symbols, this exploration is also an entertaining way to educate young readers about the heritage and national identity of Canada.

This book could have been just another boring history or geography book, but Vivien Bowers made it an enjoyable learning experience., The Canadian trivia oozes like maple syrup on hot flapjacks. Guaranteed to make you stand a little taller in your toque. ***** (of 5)., As in her other Wow Canada! books, Vivien Bowers shares her humor and her love of country with her readers. The comments made by Rachel's companions, the labels, the many little details add consistent appeal for all readers. The fact that she has it resemble a child's scrapbook...makes it very engaging to its audience., Lavishly illustrated with color photos and drawings, this latest addition to the series is excellent for projects or casual reading., By exploring Canadian symbols and icons, Bowers, entertains and delights even as she educates us about ourselves. Lots of fun and hours of browsing for Canadians of any age!, As in her other Wow Canada! books, Vivien Bowers shares her humor and her love of country with her readers. The comments made by Rachel's companions, the labels, the many little details add consistent appeal for all readers. The fact that she has it resemble a child's scrapbook makes it very engaging to its audience.

  • Very Informative!

This book is so informative - has lots of information on Canada, almost to the point of over-saturation. Luckily, the language used is pretty easy to digest - written as a mock-report by a student (Rachel) for her class assignment, it has lots of clever, funny little comments alongside the presentations of factual information - some from the "author" herself, others from her "long suffering older brother", and still others from various characters in the text. The book covers information on the Canadian flag, currency, national anthem, provinces, government, geography, food, nature/animals, etc. It's not something that you would read aloud to students in its entirety, but I've found that it is a very good resource that allows me to pick and choose small sections to present to my class, and ...
