The Up Series is a long-running documentary series about life. A documentary crew interviewed seven year old children from various backgrounds back in the mid 20th century, and they followed up with the kids every seven years. We see the process of life before us in the series as we learn about the personalities of some truly interesting individuals, and all they are doing is answering questions in front of a camera. What's so great about the individuals in this series is that they often are not aware of how much of a treasure they are, and they do not hold anything back with what they deal with on a regular basis. The most extraordinary subject of the series goes from being a level-headed young boy, to a somewhat neurotic young man unsure of what to expect next, to a homeless twenty-something, to a man living for his community while his government assists in his living. His honesty and articulation makes us wonder how he could not possibly be a successfully rich man, yet in his interviews we see that he's not angry at anything or anyone regarding his condition. He's a peaceful, genuine person, and he is exactly what we want in a documentary like this. As I've stated, this series is about life. Every individual has an interesting story and isn't afraid to let you know what they are going through and how it has affected them. You cannot ask for anything more genuine and worthwhile.Read full review
A superb documentary series that traces the lives, in seven-year intervals, of a group of native Britons, starting at age 7. Ostensibly a study of the British class system, it also reveals the choices these people make in their professional and personal lives as they pursue their hopes and dreams -- to the general fascination of many (this series had a huge following in the UK). US film critic Roger Ebert puts this series among his 10 best films ever. After watching the first DVD, I was totally hooked. This is true reality TV, of the intelligent and thought-provoking variety, that cannot help but make viewers assess their own lives as well.
The Up Series is the original approach to current reality television. The differences are that the people are caught in their real lives, not some fantasy environment. Most interesting is that we can see a little peice of us in each one of them realizing that life is similar for everyone. We get/make out of life what we expect/put into it no matter who we are. The best insight into each one of us from the viewpoint of others. A "reality television" glimpse into each of our lives. All that we learn from this series is a debt we have to those that participated, opening their real lives to the world for us to learn who we are and how our decisions will shape our future. Absolutely wonderful!!! Huge THANKS to those participating individuals caught exposed.
Have been following this series for the last 35 years. Bought as a gift for wife as she "studied " it as a new teacher. Brought up in UK education system and although it is not a scientific study I believe it has some merit.Amazing how lives have changed and yet stay the same?. I suppose in some way I am reliving the past as I recognise some elements of myself in the series. Watching real people struggle/overcome/persist in various ares of life shows how much we are interconnected. I am of the same age group of participants. Will continie to watch series and look forward to "Up 56" coming out. I am a believer in the key phrase. " Give me a child until he (she) is seven and I will show you the man(woman). Time well spent.
