Synopsis
Peopled by larger-than-life heroes and villains, charged with towering questions of good and evil, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus: a philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller--n ominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read . Who is John Galt? When he says that he will stop the motor of the world, is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battles not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? You will know the answer to these questions when you discover the reason behind the baffling events that play havoc with the lives of the amazing men and women in this book. You will discover why a productive genius becomes a worthless playboy...why a great steel industrialist is working for his own destruction...why a composer gives up his career on the night of his triumph...why a beautiful woman who runs a transcontinental railroad falls in love with the man she has sworn to kill. Atlas Shrugged , a modern classic and Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism--her groundbreaking philosophy--offers the reader the spectacle of human greatness, depicted with all the poetry and power of one of the twentieth century's leading artists., Peopled by larger-than-life heroes and villains, charged with towering questions of good and evil, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus- a philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller-n ominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read . • Great Reading!!

First of all, the book is in pristine condition, absolutely perfect! The plot is more engaging than I could have imagined. I am near the end, alas, and I can hardly WAIT to see how it ends. At the same time, I can't bear the thought that it will be over. I find the book SO engaging that I purchased the CliffsNotes to improve my understanding AND to help me keep all the characters straight. (I recommend keeping notes or you'll lose track!) Yes, it is a long, long book, but think of it as three medium books! Atlas Shrugged is a GREAT read, a timeless classic and food for thought at this time in history! You will fall in love with the "good guys" and love to hate the "bad guys!" What a literary delight!

  • Brilliant and prophetic.

More relevant today than ever before. Rand was a visionary who foresaw the decline of western values that led to the world we live in today. Political correctness run amok. Morality turned on it's head. Once we idolized greatness now we hail Caitland as a hero. Spoiled, self indulgent parasites like Paris and Kim dominate the airwaves. More importantly one need not exert great effort to innovate and create and produce value just sit back and watch mindless entertainment and draw the government assistance that is looted from the declining number of people who still actually produce. The continued popularity of Rand's work shows that not everyone is content to take the blue pill and march in lockstep much less drink the cyanide Kool Aid the looters are serving up.

  • Atlas Shrugged...what can I say? Should make you think.

Loaned my years old copy out and needed to buy a new copy. In this day and age, it's a good book. Must remember where Ayn Rand came from and what she was warning about.

  • An absolute must-read (and re-read)!

This is truly a book for our times. First published in 1957, one might wonder how relevant this book could possibly be to our present political, technological, commercial, and social age. Yet, one only has to read the first few pages to grasp the clarity of vision that Ayn Rand brings to the most fundamental concepts, values and ideals that man has struggled with generation over generation: Individual freedom, self-determination, self-worth, and the worth of what the individual creates and produces - his intellectual property, his effort, and his wealth. In the wake of corporate bail-outs, mass lay-offs, increased unemployment, and a lagging economy, this seminal work cuts to the very core of our present struggles. Predicated on the idea that no man has the right to seek personal gain ...
