EA SPORTS' F1 series roars onto the Xbox with 17 authentic tracks, 11 teams, and 22 drivers, including Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve, from the FIA 2001 Formula One World Championship. Modes of play include Quick Race, where players race to earn points needed to unlock new circuits; Challenge Mode, a series of four challenges designed to test a player's driving ability under a variety of conditions; Grand Prix Mode, where players embark on a full 17-race season, a single weekend, or fulfill specific objectives, such a placing first on every track or beating a series of teammates during the course of a grueling season.<br><br>Five multiplayer modes are also available: Split Screen, Time Challenge, Tag Team, Advantage, and Last Man Standing. Split Screen is a race against up to three players on one of the available circuits, while Time Challenge has up to 22 players alternating turns to determine who can drive the fastest lap. Tag Team supports two teams of up to four players as they take turns completing laps, and Advantage is a race to see how many laps (from one to five) can be won against an opponent. Last Man Standing removes the car in last place after each lap until only one is left. Up to four players can participate in this mode. <br><br>The racing action in F1 2001 can be customized in a number of ways. Assists are available to help adjust a vehicle's speed when approaching corners, improve traction, and prevent skidding during hard braking. An optional corner indicator warns players of approaching turns and their degree. Players can decide to have automatic pit stops, where the computer takes control of the car once it enters the pit line, or interactive pit stops, where the player controls the entrance and exit (tire changes, damage repair, and refueling are still automatic, however). Individual car adjustments in the areas of tires, aerodynamics, suspension, and gearbox are also available.

Electronic Arts has been making computer games for a long time. I remember EA games written for the C-64 which were hours of playing fun. Now with new and faster hardware, the games are more challenging and the audio video also more accurate. Simulations are not easy since scaling should be proportionate to reality.

Now that EA Games lost the F1 license to Sony, this rare Xbox gem (which is Xbox 360 compatible) is the only chance at playing Michael Schumacher for Xbox owners. Sony's upcoming P3 F1 release promises to set new standards for realistic game play, but even so, the game won't make it to the U.S. because of our affinity for watching facsimiles of the cars we get at airport rental counters go round and round in a circle (NASCAR). (Ironically, the newest NASCAR 07 release from EA Games is NOT XBox 360 compatible...none of that series is). So what's an F1 fan to do? In 2001, EA Games released F1 and for its time, the graphics and the physics are top notch. In simulation mode, the physics are almost too good, and go along way towards demonstrating how difficult driving one of these machines ... Now that EA Games lost the F1 license to Sony, this rare Xbox gem (which is Xbox 360 compatible) is the only chance at playing Michael Schumacher for Xbox owners. In "normal" mode, however, driving becomes easier, although still quite challenging. With a variety of gameplay, from single race to full champion series, there's something for everyone. But be aware that when you're in the Grand Prix mode, the realism extends beyond just the vehicle dynamics. As everyone knows in F1, there's an hour for practice, and then an hour for qualifying. So too in the game. While its possible to end both sessions early, if you end the qualifying early, even if you're on the pole, someone can come from behind and take it. So you're best bet is to spend the full hour. THEN start the race. This means, of course, that a single race can take up to two or three hours (though the race itself can be as few as 4 laps). Make sure you have the time, because if you leave the session, or the race early, you have to start over. Graphic are only fair by today's standards, but were pretty state of the art five years ago. But they're good enough still so as not to detract from the experience. If you can find this game, its rarity alone makes it worth adding it to your collection. For Xbox fans, it's the only F1 game in town, and a must have until F1 decides to license it to others besides Sony. The fact that it's a great driving simulator makes it a must have.

For a 20 year old game, i am enjoying it more than the 2019 edition. Has its flaws but it very fun to play.

Great game for 2001
This racing game is good for the year it was made, however, after playing more recent racing games (Forza Motorsport, MotoGP3 URT), the gameplay seems a bit skippy. Other than that, it is a fun game to play and the race-driving techniques you learn are applicable to the real world. Very fun to play but it requires very fast reaction times.
