A lot more went wrong than right.
'Graveyard Shift' is one of those films that I grew up being aware of my entire life, if not having a borderline awe and curiosity for the film. After all, the poster was prominently advertised in the days of my youth and littered in every video rental store I can recall visiting. 'Graveyard Shift' took on a forbidden fruit type feel for me because let's face it, if your parents tell you that you can't watch a movie your desire to see it instantly increases 10 fold. Now, having long forgotten about the film and being of age to rent/buy see about whatever I want, I indulged a moment of nostalgia and purchased 'Graveyard Shift' on DVD to satisfy a passive 21 year curiosity, and I hate to say, maybe I would been better suited living with the memories of it's well crafted poster hanging on the ... Scrutinizing 'Graveyard Shift' as an adult, you now understand why Stephen King is reluctant to license his stories for film. What was a short story basically built on a clever means to an end is over thought (one could easily argue under thought) and milked to make an 80 minute fright flick. I don't exaggerate when I say this film has some of the least developed characters to grace cinema. We hardly know the names of any of them let along any part of who they may be aside a "college boy" or "divorced", no time or effort is devoted to making us give a hoot about the people on screen. And coupled with stone wall acting we have a film that feels drawn out about characters we don't know or care about, and a lurking monster that we're never clear on what exactly it is or where it came from. 'Graveyard Shift' is not exempt from some due praise. The scenes of the mill/mines are quite good. Reading online, the filming took place in some of the oldest mills in the United States and they certainly add to the mystery. And, of all the cardboard TV series worthy acting we get here, Stephen Macht shines as the foreman of the mill. He has a most memorable accent you'll go crazy trying to label. Brad Dourif, in his brief cameo, is a pleasure to have as well. 'Graveyard Shift' is the lingerings of a dying fad. When the film studios were adapting anything King wrote into a film, with good results (Carrie, Cujo) and bad results (Graveyard Shift, Maximum Overdrive). This film came in at the end of the era when pickens were slim as to what was available to make into a film. Too many characters, all underdeveloped, and a lot of incoherence pertaining to what EXACTLY is happening on screen. It's almost a Pandora's Box feel for me, the memories of wanting to see this film are better than the actual feature itself. Then again, I didn't see the film in its prime, so maybe "I don't get" the desire or quality of it, but I see it 20 years later and I see why it's been removed from further mention.

If you dont like rats dont buy this. Great stephen king story set in a ancient new england textile mill. But its infested with a army of rodents and secrets

Scared of rats? Then this is a scary movie for you. For the rest of us it is a bad acted, badly written, bad/bad movie. Textile mill needs some sprucing. Enter giant rat/bat lunch...er, I mean temp workers! Maine must be a very creepy place, seems they have all of these underground cemeteries, pet cemeteries, average haunted cemeteries along with rats, rabid dogs, haunted cars/houses and who the heck knows what else! Go watch The Shining (Kubrik's of course) or The Stand or Salem's Lot or better yet - Carrie.Scared of rats? Then this is a scary movie for you.
