John Hartford put to rhyme the true story of a steamboat that was trapped in a cornfield along the Mississippi river in 1910,the result of rapidly receding waters. The steamboat came in during the night, when flood waters had caused the river to flood its banks and allowed the boat to dock far further in than would have been possible with normal waterflow. When the steamboat attempted to back out,it ran aground, and the receding water left it stranded for months. It became quite a sensation, with people traveling from great distances to see the Steamboat in the Cornfield. All attempts to move the boat failed until heavy rains brought the water level back up and the boat was at last floated free. This book is short, full of photos from the whole affair, and is purely delightful,in large part because of John Hartford's whimsical rhyming narrative. The book has long been found in school libraries, and has been very popular with schoolchildren for many years. Copies are fairly hard to find now, with most copies no doubt snatched up by fans of John Hartford (like myself.)I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good story,if they can find a copy.Read full review
This book was a pictorial story with added text. It was exactly what I wanted.
