A compelling drama about what could happen "The Day After" an nuclear war. While the special effects are dated by todays standards, the story as a whole is awesome. The actors protrayed their roles very well and are very beleivable. While the possability of the senario of the movie is not as likely today, the scariest part is that it could still happen. The most omminus part of the movie is the last part of the movie - in all likelyhood the events depicted would be much worse than shown. One of the most thought compelling movies of the 1980's and still today. Should be required veiwing for all people who want to go into politics.
This movie, though dated, is enough to make anyone realize that the use of nuclear weapons only leads to complete and total destruction for all sides. Must see !

I've watched this a few times and it's very interesting, other may not like it and others will. I do hope they make a remake of this movie with better CGI (special effects) and better characters. Imagine if they did remake this movie and how intense it would be and also Rate-R would be good. Anyways I do recommend this movie but not for kids.

The whole plot is very tragic. I think the story made some stupid errors, but that just like our government. If you need to know what? might in a nuclear attack, watch this movie.

One of the scariest movies I have ever seen. When I was in the Air Force at Fairchild Air Force Base, which is a Strategic Air Command base we had 5 B-52's on alert loaded with nukes. I'll never forget the first time it was my planes turn to have the nuclear weapons put on board. Seeing all that destructive power and being close enough to touch them. I am so glad we don't have planes on alert anymore but I love the B-52's.

This is a great tv movie about the day after all out nuclear war. This movies follows a couple families as they struggle to survive. "The Day After" 1985 is a tame family friendly remake of the more graphic and intense BBC shocker "Threads" 1984, although ABC set up a 1-800 number for people to call if they had trouble with the movie. The DVD offers a 1.33:1 fullscreen presentation with a very good print, giving a beautiful prestine look on DVD. This movie is widely available and can be found from $5-$10 on the Internet. Movie 8/10 DVD quality 7.5/10
An excellent portrayal of what a small scale nuclear attack on the US, and particularly a small Kansas town, would look like. Great special effects, good acting. I saw this movie in the 80's and never forgot it and got DVD copies to keep and share with friends who need to see what could happen if someone actually pushed the 'button'. I recommend it.

I vividly remember this movie from the first & only time it aired on US television, back in Nov.1983. It scared me then & scared me again tonight when I watched it. In an age when we can watch housemates having sex or women beating each others' asses on tv, this movie was deemed so disturbing by The Powers That Be that it was only shown on network tv once. I remember when it aired in '83, sponsors declined to buy any ad time after the point where the nuclear strike happens, so the 2nd half ran with no commercials, which was unprecedented. I believe THE DAY AFTER is still the highest rated tv movie in history, with 100+ million viewers in 1 night. (Granted, this was the pre-internet, pre-cable tv era). Now, even theatrical films only show a warhead being launched & a distant mushroom cloud after a nuclear strike & that's it. This movie puts you right in the middle of a nuclear blast, then goes on to show you the effects of radiation poisoning in those who were far enough from ground zero to not be vaporized instantly or incinerated minutes later by a tsunami of fire. It won 2 prime time Emmys & made millions of people rethink their views on nuclear weapons as a 'deterrent'. This one is definitely worth adding to your home collection, esp. for teachers/educators.Read full review
One of the earliest films to portray the short term effects of nuclear war. An excellent portrayal of societal breakdown in short order.
