The coal bags represent a sack with the top rolled back with coal in the top. They come in moulded black plastic and are quite realistic except that they are very tall. As a child, in the fifties and sixties, I can well recall the coalman delivering sacks balanced on his shoulder that he threw down into the cellar. He would never have been able to lift these up on his own, let alone swing them onto his shoulders. Maybe they're aren't supposed to be the type that domestic coal was delivered in though I've never seen any different type of coal sacks used. I think I'll cut them in half and paint the sacking a lighter colour to highlight/contrast with the coal at the open top.

The coal sacks are o.k. except the scale is all wrong. They are too tall, ( nearly as tall as a figure ) so i cut nearly a third off them, plus they need weathering.
