About this product

Product Information

Based on actual events in 1838, AMISTAD is the story of captured African slaves who took over their transport ship in a bloody revolt with the hopes of returning back to their homeland. After the slaves are caught and imprisoned, their leader, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou), unable to understand the language or court system of America, tries to communicate his desire to return home to his defense lawyer, Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), and former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman). The men plead for help with their groundbreaking court case from former president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins). Steven Spielberg directed this moving film, using as a reference the book by William A. Owens, BLACK MUTINY: THE REVOLT ON THE SCHOONER AMISTAD. The Africans in the movie speak Mende, with subtitles added. West African actor Djimon Hounsou had to learn to speak the language for his role--and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Spielberg shot the film at the State House in Providence, Rhode Island, the seaport in Mystic, Connecticut, and other New England locations.

Item arrived damaged and seller did not offer any solution when contacted. They blamed USPS shipping but packaging seemed inadequate for an item with glass (mismatched foam board pieces, thin bubble wrap, and one balled up piece of newspaper). Keeping the frame because we like it so much but it essentially did not arrive as described and we did not get good value as we now have to buy a replacement glass after paying full price for the frame.

I’m very disappointed. This auction described a New product with a new photo. I received a bent and damaged item. The packaging is a wreck. The product is completely melded to the package. Poor quality. The seller apologized about the condition and justified it by explaining it was last of their inventory. They included an extra item … also damaged. They provided a discount towards a future purchase and would not refund the costs. Super fast shipping though!

  • Amazing Film

To start, the performances from the actors are phenomenal (especially from Djimon Hounsou and Matthew McConaughey). The subject matter is unsettling. President Van Buren is treated in a complicated matter as he is shown caving in to the South too quickly. (Which can make sense to some as he didn't show too much anti-slavery feelings until much later in his life.) The trial is thorough and played out realistically. Any potential narm moments such as Cinque's courthouse speech to set him and his fellow Africans free are made charming in this film and bound to provoke tears in the eyes of a few moviegoers. And it's scored by the same composer and director of Schnidler's List. That right there can make this film worth checking out.
