    • Forget relevance, forget age, a great read

      Okay, that's an unfair title for the review but, above the facts this book remains relevant and is over 60 years old, it's a great read. To forget the age, you'll need to overlook the changes in technology, that's about all. The characters are drawn well, the situation realised with consistency an without shortcuts. The setting of global catastrophe runs second place to the drama of ordinary people proving they are extraordinary by carrying on against an awful fate that is clear to them. In spite of the post-atomic war scenario, the look at Melbourne how it was in the 1950s is good, with locations and ways of life closely observed -- the only query is over the suburb of Falmouth, why Shute did not just say Frankston when he correctly named other suburbs is an oddity.
