The Benedictine nuns of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Desert were founded to reflect the feminine expression of desert monasticism through living a simple life of silence and solitude, to seek God by observing the Rule of St. Benedict. The title of our monastery emphasizes our devotion to our Lady, who is prefigured in the Book of Revelations, "the woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God." (Rev 12:6). Our work and mission is prayer. Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ. (Rule of St. Benedict 72:11) The bell calls us at 3:53 a.m., to begin our monastic day. We come together seven times a day to pray the Divine Office, the official prayer of the Roman Catholic Church. This prayer focuses on the entire Book of Psalms from the Old Testament. Our morning is busy with household chores, meal preparation, income-producing work, formation classes, etc. The afternoon is dedicated to Lectio Divina, (praying with the Scriptures and sacred reading). We are very aware of the sufferings and pains of our world and praying for these needs is an important part of our daily prayer life. Our Journey of Trust began with a gift of 40 acres of land in Gobernador, New Mexico. We entrust the building of our monastery to the intercession of St. Joseph, which will include a Guest House/Retreat Center, a place where all can come to join us for a time of silence, prayer, renewal, and spiritual refreshment. We invite you to join us in this monumental effort. Together we will build an oasis of peace for our troubled world. We are praying for you.
