Decent but not best simmer capability, in a lightweight internal tank design, parts available. Whitegas.
This stove is the light weight backpacking incarnation of the 533 Sportster II (2) stove (which also makes a nice backpacking unit). The 400B shares many parts with the 533 II (the whole top burner bowl, burner, and the generator are all the same), and the 533 stove is still made, so the parts are available for it and this 400B. The pump uses the smaller exponent style Coleman pump (shorter than the standard size on most lanterns and large suitcase stoves, and the 533 as well) but still in decent availability. This stove heats water well, uses whitegas Coleman fuel (or Crown or any other whitegas Naptha style fuel). It main unique feature is that it also does a pretty good job of simmering on low heat settings, which many pack stoves cannot do. That makes it good for cooking eggs, ... That makes it good for cooking eggs, bacon, or any other "real" food on the trail, instead of just boiling water fast. I only give it 4 stars because the 400B while it simmers pretty well, is not the all time champion of simmering. (I think that the best simmer stoves are actually the older 502, or the older 400 (not 400A, or 400B) stoves, which have a different generator and valve and needle cleaner/adjuster setup and allow for even better simmer control. However, those are much older units, and now hard to find, but more importantly, hard to find parts for.) So, overall, for most people, the 400B is probably one of the best pack stoves you can buy. And in COVID 2020, when finding alcohol stove fuel is difficult to impossible (for ultralight alcohol stoves of any kind), this is a solid performer that runs on whitegas, and in an emergency, can run on gasoline (not recommended, clogs up the generator pretty quickly, so emergency fuel use, when just can't get any whitegas). A great little stove. Worn units but functional can be had for about $75 and high quality new or nearly new units for about $100-120. And you don't pollute the land-fill with isopropane cylinders, or the environment with escaped left over is isopropane gas (when you puncture and crush the cylinder at retirement). So, for a solid pack stove, at a great price, with simmer capability, parts availability, and the best environmental footprint (no cylinders in the landfill, hydrocarbons in the air, and you are likely recycling someone else's old stove in buying a used one) you really have a great stove in the Coleman 400B.

Best for simmering
Been using one like this for 30 years, hauled it all over North America and to Europe. If you want to eat something other than dehydrated meals, this is one of the only stoves that has a controllable flame and simmers well.
