    Stiff Script Walking

I had the advantage of reading Bill Bennett's book just a few weeks before watching this movie the first time. I really wanted to like this movie because I loved the book but it is not 5 stars. I gave it 4 as once again, Hollywood changed the story so much. It was enjoyable for the most part but unneeded changes gave one the feeling of sucking on a tootsie pop, all sweetness and joy till the middle is reached and it is a sour flavor. The script writer took the book and made a well crafted script that worked for the most part on screen. Trouble is, the book was not fiction and was written not that long ago about a REAL trip the author took. The changes made to reality reflect the absurdity Hollywood has in trying to change history. Simple changes not needed. But on the brighter side, the overall picture was worth watching as an outdoor flick, a credible attempt at a buddy movie and as a semi-sweet comedy. Nolte was superb and Redford his straight man played well. The only real problem I have with this movie is the script was stiff, not at ease as the flow of the book was. Crafted and constructed by a professional but not with feeling and real emotion. To sum it up, I still put the movie in my camping collection for those days when the weather makes doing anything but staying in the tent and watching a movie the logical thing to do. Its a fun movie but the real story told on screen would have been funnier and more satisfying instead of a nicely crafted but inaccurate, less than emotional script from a heavy handed studio stooge.

    Potential Unrealized

There's really wasn't enough character development and the story line was weak. I think the premise was great and could have been an outstanding story, but this story just didn't deliver on that potential. Too bad. The cast was outstanding, obviously.

  • A Walk in the Woods

Good movie for which my expectations were not very Hjgh after readjng reviews. I've read the book several times and it was hilarious. The movie does not follow the script much. As a hiker, I was hoping to see more interaction with trail life but was disappointed in that regards. Many of the humorous spots were predictable. I will pass the dvd around to my hiking friends and get their opinions.

  • A Walk in the woods is the right title.

This is a very good and interesting movie. Both actors worked together in every scene they are in. I did not know where this would end until at the very last of the movie.

  • Yes, Stars Age as we do. Shocker

Movie was good. Same old Robert Redford, Nick Nolte was good. Good story. 2 friends try to walk The Appalachian Trail. Problematic to start with. You need endurance to complete. Lol. GOOD RAINY DAY MOVIE.

  • Most entertaining!

I saw this movie on the "big screen" and LOVED it! I had walked portions of the Appalachian Train in my youth, and I had read the book (you should do THAT too!) and I found the movie quite engaging. Even my young daughter loved it, and having this DVD, we've already played it several times and recommended it to numerous friends and family. You can't go wrong with this movie! Make your day an adventure....

  • Excellent cast.

Many of us older viewers can identify with taking a chance before becoming too aged. A good mixture of real life seriousness and good humor.

  • Funny & worth watching...

I like this movie & thought Redford & Nolte did a great job playing off each other...don't know if I would have paid the extra money to watch it on the big screen. Scenery was great would have loved to seen more, but really did enjoy how funny they were together!

  • Love this movie, had a whole roomful of people laughing their heads off

I don't usually laugh til my sides hurt, but this one did it. (Actually, I don't usually find much funny in a lot of the "comedies" they have these days.) These two play off each other perfectly. If you don't see something of yourself in this movie, you'll surely know someone you know. I've seen a couple of reviews which mentioned 'language' but we had a 'movie night' where quite a few friends from multiple religions (and no religion) attended and happily laughed their way thru this movie, with everyone heading off to recommend it to their friends. Although there is some 'language' in this, mostly it's very muted/mumbled and you only notice the really bad words if you're avidly listening for them.
