About this product
Product Information
Originally developed, published, and released by developer Midway Games for the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2), Area 51 remains a favorite among fans of the science fiction game genre. Area 51 had a release date of April 25, 2005 for North American gamers. Upon its release date, it opened to above-average reviews that indicated it was an enticing choice for players who enjoyed games similar to Area 51. This exciting game takes the original Area 51 arcade game and transforms it, so it is suitable for gameplay on the PS2. This is a first-person shooter game that tells the story from the point-of-view of Ethan Cole, the game’s main protagonist. Ethan Cole is a mission specialist who has been sent to an alien base beneath Area 51. His goal is to locate HAZMAT Team Delta so that he can combat a virus. However, his mission encounters a slew of unexpected threats. PS2 players use an assortment of weapons, such as shotguns and alien grenades, to combat an increasingly larger number of enemies. You can fire these weapons with one or both of your hands, providing an endless array of combat options. Gamers also have the ability to operate machinery, such as artillery turrets. Weapons in Area 51 are of human and alien origins. Players have multiple options for gameplay with the PS2. This includes playing the single-player storyline or switching to multiplayer mode so as to play with other science fiction enthusiasts. Although the official online option for gameplay is not available, there are unofficial alternatives for playing the game online with other players. If you prefer to play online, there are multiple modes for online gameplay, such as Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Capture and Hold. With so many different modes, it feels like you have multiple games within this one game disk. As you explore the base, be prepared to scan various objects. These objects provide valuable information concerning the game’s environment. There is a portion of Ethan Cole’s suit used for scanning objects. However, use caution, as you cannot access your weapons when scanning. Scanning also provides valuable insight as to how difficult characters can be conquered. Area 51 has a rating of “M” for mature, meaning that this game is appropriate for PS2 players who are 17 years of age or older. Cheats are available for Area 51 if you are interested in altering your gameplay. If you get stuck on a tricky part of the game, walkthrough videos are valuable resources for conquering the portion of the game that is causing you anguish. When Midway Games created Area 51, it employed a slew of notable voice actors. David Duchovny lends his voice to Ethan Cole, the main character, while singer Marilyn Manson provides the voices of Edgar the ancient and the powerful Grey. Powers Boothe is the voice of Major Bridges, and Ian Abercrombie voices Dr. Cray. Fans of science fiction games will find much to enjoy while playing Area 51 for the PS2.
