About this product

Product Information

Ninth Justice is the story of a vigorous band of underfunded, determined, 'movement' conservative activists who labored tirelessly for the U.S. Senate's confirmation of Judge Robert H. Bork after President Ronald Reagan nominated him to the Supreme Court in July 1987. It chronicles the organizational efforts primarily of Patrick B. McGuigan (Coalitions for America) and Daniel L. Casey (American Conservative Union)-both intensely Republican, devout Catholics, ardent admirers of the nominee-who understood from the first moment of the battle that they were involved in the most significant political confrontation of their lives.

Conservatives McGuigan and Weyrich attack the Left with relish here, yet manage to report their antagonists' efforts in enough blow-by-blow detail to re-create the atmosphere of the infamous Bork fight....this work could be profitably read as a solid illustration of how our political elites gird for dialogue..., ...a heretofore unsurpassed and quite often stunning portrayal of the social and political forces that collided over the nomination of Judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court....a first-rate book... Ninth Justice deserves and, I suspect, will receive considerable attention from academic political scientists in their own research and, hopefully, undergraduate courses on law and politics., ...must reading for political scientists, journalists, conservatives and fairminded liberals who want to understand why the fight to confirm Judge Bork to the Supreme Court was lost., McGuigan and Weyrich do a nice job of putting the conservative campaign in the larger context of the confirmation process and the liberals' efforts. And there are even some juicy tidbits such as [Senator Warren] Rudman's failed promise to help the Borkproponents., McGuigan and Weyrich do a nice job of putting the conservative campaign in the larger context of the confirmation process and the liberals' efforts. And there are even some juicy tidbits such as [Senator Warren] Rudman's failed promise to help the Bork proponents., It is an excellent book. Well written in an easy, flowing style. I know it will sell to anyone wanting to know the facts of the battle and what the future holds for...good, 'strict constructionists'...[The authors] deserve every plaudit., I am particularly grateful for [Pat McGuigan's] efforts during the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court and , more recently, [his] excellent book which tells about the struggle. [Ninth Justice] will help to educate the public about the critical issues that were involved in that nomination and, I hope, will pave the way for the successful appointment of constitutionally-oriented justices in the future., McGuigan and Weyrich do a nice job of putting the conservative campaign in the larger context of the confirmation process and the liberals' efforts.
