About this product

Product Information

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known . . . of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul . . . of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame . . . and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother. A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett's historical masterpiece. 'Enormous and brilliant . . . this mammoth tale seems to touch all human emotion - love and hate, loyalty and treachery, hope and despair. This is truly a novel to get lost in' Cosmopolitan 'A historical saga of such breadth and density . . . Follett succeeds brilliantly in combining hugeness and detail to create a novel imbued with the rawness, violence and blind faith of the era' Sunday Express

    My kind of novel

Combing History with Fiction This story describes the hardships/triumphs for the characters in The Early Middle Ages. All roles they portray e.g. Monk, Merchant, Knight, Builder, King etc, have their pros and cons which makes it more interesting rather than just making sound all glamourous and exciting when the battle scenes occur in some other stories. If you like this then I would definitely recommend the Sequel 'World Without End' which takes place in The High Middle Ages.

  • Fantastic read to get lost in.

Fantastic value and excellent service. This book is a mega read and the excitement starts at the very beginning. Just started to read it and already I don’t want to put it down. Ken Follett is an amazing writer. I would highly recommend all of his books as he is so brilliant.

  • Wonderful historic thriller

I found this book difficult to put down as it was so utterly compelling with its various twists and turns never knowing what was next. The historical facts were also extremely well presented and knowing so much of the saxon and succeeding eras of kings of England I even checked some of the facts. I would have no problem in recommending this book to anyone who likes a good story with a lot of drama mixed with factual but very interesting info and also that all the villains got their come-uppance in the end. There was not a single page that didn't have some surprises on it and just when you might think things were going well, something always came up to upset the applecart. 4170freddy

  • Top 100 Book

Couldn’t put it down. I’d watched a series years ago about Tom Builder and enjoyed it. I think it was vaguely based on this book but the way Ken Follett writes it just had me turning pages. What with a love story going on, some evil driven villains, immense charity, heartbreak and the best of all, revenge served cold. Over a thousand pages of it. One thing, it’s a bit heavy in the bath. Probably would have been better on a kindle.

  • All time favourite book

I am so glad I bought this book, I feel like it has changed my life as I have now found a new line in the medieval ages. This book has everything in it for everyone. If you are humming and ahhing about this... BUY IT! You will not regret it. Actually you will regret you would not have read it sooner.
