Almost 80 minutes of music, mostly from Melanie's early years in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Showcases her vocal range from lilting pop in "brand New Key" to rasping folk in the post-Woodstock anthem "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". Not every tune appeals to the same degree, but the CD is definitely worth purchasing.

'Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits of Melanie' is a fairly complete collection of Melanies' greatest hits. Best known for the #1 hit 'Brand New Key', Melanie shows the wide range of her singer/songwriter/guitarist abilities on this CD. Included is the unabridged version of the amazing 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)', a gosepl sing-along with the Edwin Hawkins singers back-up. 'Beautiful People' is also an amazing song, as are 'Summer of Love II', 'Ruby Tuesday', 'What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?', 'Leftover Wine' and 'Animal Crackers'. Melanie is more that a 'one-hit wonder'. From folk to gospel to pop - Melanie did it all. A nice representation of the late 60's and early 70's folk/hippie sounds, this CD certainly is nostalgic and pleasant to the ear. I bought this CD to add to my collection of 'era' music.Read full review
I like this CD very much because it's a collection of Melanie's best songs. I bought it for my husband because he has 2 of her records which he enjoys very much and for all practical purposes it was time to upgrade to a CD version. Her version oF 'Ruby Tuesday' is uniquely done in her style and what Melanie fan could forget 'Lay Down' or 'Ring the Living Bell'? All 19 songs are as clear as if they were recorded yesterday.
