This is an enchanting story. I was immediately drawn in as the prose is beautiful and yet spare and the tale moves along very quickly. I was not all that familiar with this specific time and locale in America's history so as the story was compelling I also learned about the history. At 200 pages the story ended almost too soon. I could have read much more of this beautiful tale. I have to rank this as one of my favorite books and one that I will recommend often.

Let’s face it, Tom Hanks is good. But he takes a backseat to Captain Kidd. The book kept me on the edge of my chair from page one. Paulette Jilles paints a moving history of the southwest, that few can in vision. I found myself looking up pipes, pistols, and words not given to our everyday speech. This is the third book of Jilles that I have committed to history. The first Enemy Women, second The Color of Lightning, and now News of the World. Tomorrow I’ll search for other volumes of her penmanship.

I totally enjoyed this book. a very fast read, well written. The subject material was new to me-- Texas in the mid nineteenth century. The main characters were well-developed and likable.

Am almost finished with the book but hate for it to end. Well written, a compelling story of part of the old west from an intimate perspective.
