This is a review of the Rocktron Tri-Wah. My background is 27 year guitar player and I have owned a Clyde McCoy Vox before and a Snarling Dogs Wah. Also played on many different types. I have gigged with this pedal and it gets the job done. The Rocktron is built solidly, and after review of the circuit schematic it looks like the majority of the wahs out there. The inductor is a 600 MH just like the vintage wahs and the tri-wah is called tri wah because you can switch in three levels of capacitor with the wah inductor to give NORMAL, VINTAGE, or BASS wah (it can be used for a bass or 7 string guitar). I find that the VINTAGE is the best sounding and have resisted the urge to upgrade the inductor with a Red Fasel (500 MH). The reason being that the circuit designers took the time to make the tri wah do the basic job of a RED and YELLOW fasel inductor wah. I also determined that the wah would not be a good candidate for this silly inductor upgrade craze. Also I did not see a need to mess with the "Q" of the pedal. If you dont know what I mean, read this: http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm So the tri-Wah is in par with the sound and tone of classic wahs (and not the very oinky sounding CryBaby wahs). It definitely works best as the FIRST thing in the chain after guitar. Price: I got it for 45 bucks delivered in MINT condition with original box on eBay, or you can pay about 80 bucks brand new. Construction: solid metal and quality parts. The only gripe I had was when I got it the battery door had a broken tab. A phone call to Rocktron got me a new door FREE at my mailbox in 4 days (COOOL!) Sound: Like the Vox Clyde McCoy - not an oinking pedal, more of a voicy pedal. Crybaby classic users might be disappointed they cant have their sound go from audible to brite and sheet metal brittle (which I cant stand). This pedal is about clarity and voicy-ness in a wah. Features: input, output, 9V power plug, cool blue CLICK light, 3 position knob - and like all Rocktron Wah pedals is TRUE BYPASS. Also you can adjust the wah pedal travel incase you like BIG like a Vox or tiny like a CryBaby. Support: Rocktron is a dream to work with. They are about action and not words for the working musician. Cons: Made in China (not much 'valuable' resale value), selector knob seems too big and could get sheared off (maybe never happen), is not that magical wah that seems to only exist in my head (none have hit that mark). Pros: simple, effective, inexpensive, durable and rugged. I dont have to think when I use it: just use it. My Bottom line: The Tri-Wah is a great quality pedal for the money (30 or so bucks cheaper than the 'pro' pedals) and is better than the stock crybaby and under 80 dollar Vox wahs. It does not have that razor effect on the sound like some wahs, but trades this off with being more like a Clyde McCoy (play one if you dont know what I mean) and is clear - and NOT weak and lifeless. The all metal construction and gig-worthy feel makes this a great pedal to own. Its made in China like everything else, but this is not like the Chinese junk I have seen. The Chinese are getting their act together and this pedal is an example of that. I needed a gig-quality true-bypass pedal MADE OUT OF METAL that did not cost alot and had to sound good (not just OK: it had to be GOOD). I like the Vox Clyde, and this pedal is close enough for this guy to the 160.00 Clydes (if you can find them).Read full review
I found out that Steve Turner from Mudhoney uses this and decided to get one myself. I'm very happy with this wah. It works great, sounds great and it's nice to have the three settings. It is solidly built, looks nice and the price will not break the bank.
