I bought this unit to replace a 9 year old Lowrance combo. This has what is called "contour xd" data base. I think that is deceptive since it suggest that it has marine depth data. Not so, the lakes show up as white blobs, very little use as a marine data base. You need the Navionics or Lakemaster if you are going to fish or use it as marine navigation. I thought that this was deceptive so therefore the 4 rating. Also I like my speed, depth, and a couple readouts on my screen at all tomes. Customizing the readouts only works on a couple screens. So information is in different places on the screen depending which view you are in. The 9 year old Lowrance had this capability. Overall nice unit, just a few picky items.
Though the picture shows it, the unit I purchased does not have down imaging. I was fully aware of that fact before I bought it. The unit I have works wonderfully. I installed it at the helm of my bass boat and use the GPS mapping and regular sonar together while running up and down the lake. The built in uni-map is adequate for basic navigation, but if detailed mapping is what you need, you may want to purchase additional mapping software. Humminbird quality and reliability is unmatched. The unit is easy to use and configure. I especially like the three pre-set views buttons. Those buttons allow you to select three diffent configurations of views and save them by assigning one of those buttons. My favorite view is the GPS map and sonar in a split screen view. When I get ready to crank up and run across the lake, I hit one button and instantly get the view I want. Awesome! This unit also has TWO SD Card slots. Some units only have one slot. You will quickly realize that with two slots you can install your purchased detailed mapping software in one slot while having a blank SD Card installed in the other for things like storing way points, recording images etc. without having to switch out cards. Nice! For my needs, this unit is exactly what I wanted. Considering that I went from 1990's technology fish finders to this, it was a definate upgrade which I am extemely pleased with.Read full review
Nice screen, some lakes' depth contours are very detailed, some not so much (these are lakes in MN). There's a list of high-def and standard def contour maps included in the device on Hummingbird's website. The GPS speed varies by .6mph while sitting still, even tied to the dock or on a parked trailer. If you want exact trolling speed, this doesn't give it. I have heard that an external GPS puck receiver will solve that problem. After 13 months of use, I liked it while it worked, but now it sometimes continually reboots without getting to an operational screen. When I press the button to mark a spot, it reboots, and has always done that (very annoying). Also, now it always defaults to metric settings and loses any track info when I turn it on.
Recently purchased two Humminbird 788ci HD DI Combo units.Have not installed them yet. Open water season is over for me.Our local Lund dealer has installed alot of them and he states they work well.Got an exceptional price through eBay and will try them out next year.Humminbird seems to predominate in our area;ease of use, good map card performance and good map options available, units perform well, based on comments from other users.Probably at least 4 stars. teresajanice
Humminbird 788ci Combo Fishfinder I like to keep things simple, so I just got the one with the Nav. did not think I would use the SI or DI that much. So the long and short is, I like the whole unit. It shows where you are at all the time so you can not get lost and easy to use and the screen is very clear fish finder works great. Very happy with the unit and would recommend to any one.
