To be clear. This film is a gay porn feature from the 70's. It is fairly typical for that era. In that, the filming and production reflects the low budget. So does the acting and directing. Don't get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is campy and fun. As with other movies of the era, it is supposed to have a "moral" grounding in order to try and avoid any potential legal problems. In this case, the morality came from the alleged innocence of the heroes and their love for each other as they face the "bad guys". If you want to take a journey down memory lane, this film is for you. It is not anything like the bare knuckles (and everything else), harsh images often found in today's adult films. There is some gentility and attempts at some sincerity with the characters and film itself. It is a look through rose colored glasses.Read full review

This film of nearly a half-century ago is one of the earliest attempts at making a gay positive film· While the writing and acting is stilted, the production quality somewhat crude, and the ethos very much reflects the 70's -- psychedelic mushrooms, Indian medicine man (the guru) -- it is an important film in the developing queer liberation story · I found the music especially annoying; it drowned out the plot, and was not well coordinated with the action· My dvd appears to have been copied direct from film (no tape), has odd stop motion pauses, perhaps when film reels were changed? No native Americans in this film! No scruffy mountain men either; all clean shaven anglos -- a true depiction of the American West of the nineteenth century.

Loved the book but the movie, despite beautiful scenery and gorgeous cast, just misses the mark. Once again I’m left wondering why someone would film a popular book but seemingly not read more than the blurb on the back cover to write the script. The book was rich with detail and imagery. The movie is rich with imagery but only BARELY follows the story from the book. Worth buying for being an early part of LGBT film (like the much reviled “Cruising” or “Making Love” or “Boys In The Band”) but expect no more substance than cotton candy with actors that are 9’s and 10’s. I’d advise watching the movie then reading the book. It’s fabulous!

I had read a three-book 'Loon' trilogy back in the 70's. Didn't know there was a film of it. Pleasant random surprise listing. Thanx so much.
