About this product

Product Information

Winner of the Man Booker Prize 2012, the 2012 Costa Book of the Year and shortlisted for the 2013 Women's Prize for Fiction. With this historic win for Bring Up the Bodies, Hilary Mantel becomes the first British author and the first woman to be awarded two Man Booker Prizes. By 1535 Thomas Cromwell is Chief Minister to Henry VIII, his fortunes having risen with those of Anne Boleyn, the king's new wife. But Anne has failed to give the king an heir, and Cromwell watches as Henry falls for plain Jane Seymour. Cromwell must find a solution that will satisfy Henry, safeguard the nation and secure his own career. But neither minister nor king will emerge unscathed from the bloody theatre of Anne's final days. An astounding literary accomplishment, Bring Up the Bodies is the story of this most terrifying moment of history, by one of our greatest living novelists.

I can't remember enjoying historical fiction as much as when I read Wolf Hall. Just great writing. So immersive that I hardly wanted it to end. I haven't yet read Bringing Up the Bodies, but I hope it's just as good.

    • Stunning historical novel - also for people who don't like history...

My usual reading material is a combination of factual, science-based books ('A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson is probably the best of its kind) and crime novels (currently Rebus...). I have next to zero interest in history, and could barely name a single Henry VIII wife. Why did I buy this book? Because I heard Stephen Fry refer to Wolf Hall as 'amazing' or similar, so I thought I needed to expand my horizons a wee bit. Hilary Mantel was a new name to me, and I was blissfully unaware that she was flavour of the month, if not of the past few years. So it was that I ended up with, first, Wolf Hall and not Bring up the Bodies - its sequel. Both books are utterly compelling, and grip you from the start. Very much focussed on Tom Cromwell, Ms Mantel is clearly very ...

    • Superbly written.

The follow on to Wolf Hall. A fascinating read if you’re interested in this period of history. Highly recommended.
