The purpose of this article is to write a review of the book, Blue Shoes And Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith. I loved this book!!! I highly recommend that you read this book. The only thing that I would recommend more than that you read this book, is that you read all of the books in this series. This is the seventh book. Just go ahead and order this book and the previous six books in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. Once you read any one of these books, you are going to want to read them all. I think that the thing I love about these books is that although they have a mystery base to them, they are not violent and gory. Also, you are not treated to the intimate details of the characters sex lives. What a relief! There is not even a description of people kissing. Mr. ... Mr. Smith was born in Africa and that is the setting for Blue Shoes And Happiness and the other books in this series. His love for his native country shines through. Even though these books are fiction, I can honestly say that I learned more about Africa after I started reading these books. I read a lot and I especially love mysteries. I would have to rank Alexander McCall Smith as one of my top five favorite authors. If you have not read anything in this series yet I can recommend that you start. If you have read previous books in this series, this book is as wonderful as the others. I am going to list the books in this series here so you can make sure that you get them all: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Tears Of The Giraffe Morality For Beautiful Girls The Kalahari Typing School For Men The Full Cupboard Of Life In The Company Of Cheerful Ladies Blue Shoes And Happiness All of these books are for sale on ebay and/or half.com at various sites. This installment of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series of books staring Precious Ramotswe and her compatriots finds her worrying about her traditional size, her able assistant's betrothal and an assortment of "cases" bringing in no money, but worthy enough for Precious to find answers where she can. I love this series; common sense accompanied with a keen eye and good judgment and the necessity to do the best one can are what make me want to read each book. Blue Shoes and Happiness, Alexander McCall Smith
I initially bought the first book in this series about the first woman detective in Botswana because I especially like reading mystery stories and because my son had recently gone on a mission trip to Botswana and I wanted to learn more about the culture of the country. I found the first book to be interesting and informative about the culture and I have wanted to read more about the characters and the country in each book that has followed. I find Mma Ramotswe to be a very interesting character - logical, dependable, lovable, and upstanding. Mma Makutse is even more interesting with more character flaws and contradictions. Character development has continued in each successive book and adds to plot twists. I have been enjoying each of these books very much and Blue Shoe and Happiness ... I find I am always ready to start a new book in the series as soon as I have finished the last one. If only McCall Smith could write his novels as fast as I can read them. It also has expanded my understanding and knowledge of another country's culture. I think such a thing makes for better fellowship around the world. I looked for many of the things my son had told me about the country and found them to be as he said. I won't go into a listing of them because finding them out and understanding how they came to be so is part of what makes the books so interesting. The mysteries plots as laid out do not follow standard formulas and that also adds to the interest in the stories. I enjoy novels with multiple plot lines and these stories have never failed to interest me partially due to the multiple plot lines which are never quite merged but manage to be resolved by the books ending in a satisfying way. I don't see how anyone could fail to enjoy each and everyone of the novels in this series. They can be read out of sequence but would be much more interesting when read in sequence.

I picked up the 1st book at a garage sale because it looked interesting and I had never read anything by Alexander McCall Smith. I WAS HOOKED!!! The main character is Mma Precious Ramotswe and the books are stories about her life, others in her life, her adventures with her detective agency and her house on Zebra Drive. These stories are so uplifting, simple, funny and sometimes sad that once you start reading you cannot put them down. It makes you realize what is and what is not important. I hope that Mr. Smith continues with this series because I am now in deep withdrawal having read the last book. More from Precious and the gang at the detective agency and motor repair shop. A wonderful series that almost anyone could like. Light and sweet, but still well worth reading, great people and lots of learning involved.
