Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) is an FBI mole who integrates himself into the Mafia pecking order by posing as "jewel man" Donnie Brasco. He finds his loyalties divided when Lefty Ruggiero, a jaded hit man, takes him on as a protégé and places real trust in him. The two men form a friendship--and a criminal partnership--that jeopardizes Brasco's mission and obscures the boundaries between the law and the underworld. The film is based on the autobiography DONNIE BRASCO, MY UNDERCOVER LIFE IN THE MAFIA by former undercover agent Joseph D. Pistone. Directed by Mike Newell (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL) and also starring Bruno Kirby (THE FRESHMAN, THIS IS SPINAL TAP), Michael Madsen (RESERVOIR DOGS) and Anne Heche (WAG THE DOG).

    Donnie Brasco Mob Reality

    One of the things to remember when watching Donnie Brasco is that it based on a true story. That is, the events really happened. This a good look at the everyday workings of the Mafia, not by the top echelon of Bosses and Capos, but by the lower level, those "soldiers" just carrying out their jobs. The acting is great, especially the interaction between Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, as Johnny's character Donnie Brasco gets sucked in to mob life, even as he is an undercover cop trying to bust these people. A well made movie and I give it five stars.

    A movies for the ages

    Set shortly after the construction of the Verrazano Bridge this master piece of method acting shows what happens when you connect two previously isolated worlds. Staten Island meets Brooklyn, the FBI greets the Italians. Symbolism abound, I recommend this flick to any fan of the occult.
