    About time

Having worked on motorbikes (my own, friends, acquaintances and customers) for years i've always managed certain jobs without having the 'correct' tool. Upside-down fork servicing was one such job. Sometimes things came easy, others i was driven to sweaty, sweary shoutiness and near insanity when doing the job alone with my home-made, Heath Robinson mackle-ups. Having an assistant would've made the job easy but i never seemed to have on to hand...until now. This tool makes the job a total doddle and will add at least five years to my life-span i'm sure, and ward off further brain-damage. It's not cheap, the one i got was a bargain compared to some mind, but it will prove worth every penny, already has in fact, the day i got it.

    Spring has sprung.

A very basic tool which seems to do the job until you get the spring compressed and then if you are not alert it suddenly shoots inward or outward with force. This can damage the fork leg or yourself if not careful. There needs some redesigning to provide a steady bracket or a completely revamped assembly. Instead of the lower locating pin, the leg should be held in a clamp. I have a welder so may add something to it but its not value for money in its present form. The only safe way to operate it is with an assistant to stabilise the fork leg while the load is applied and released. The 2 screws that are supposed to locate in the upper damper sleeve have ends that are too big to fit any Honda damper units that I have and needed to be ground down to enable use.

  • Good value and makes life so much easier!

Invaluable bit of kit that is a must have for any biker. It's good value and very easy to use, which saves me having to make my wife hold the fork leg while I try and hang off it like a monkey trying to compress the spring. I changed the seals and bearings on all 3 of my bikes last week, easy as anything.

  • Excellent. I would advise that you use it whilst it is clamped into a vice, it make it so much easier.

I have used various spring compressors in the past, either they were not capable of compressing the spring in larger forks or they were of poor build quality. The Sealey MS1824, was more than capable, easy to use and fit.

  • Great tool for a motorcyclists collection!

Its a good sturdy tool which does the job well enough. The only thing I would sat is that there is a little 'shoulder' on the tip of the bolts. This meant I had to drill out the holes in the part of the fork to 8mm for the tool to work. No biggie really but be aware! Having this tool will save me loads in the long run! I have probably broken even already on labour charges to change the seals!
