    Slow but precise.

If you want to slow down your shooting and be more intentional, I highly recommend this head. I went from a ball head which was lighter and very fast to set up but difficult for fine tuning my compositions. This head is geared and the rubber knobs turn to make precision camera positions especially appropriate for architectural work. The mounting plate is bigger than expected and the head overall quite robust. Although rated for 11 lbs, I use a DSRL and medium and large format film cameras on it with ease. Once the camera is locked down it will not drift yet the slightest turn of the knob will give precise control. I imagine it would work very well with long telephoto or macro lenses where small adjustments make big changes in composition. The knobs could be somewhat smoother and the ...

  • Just Possibly The Best LF Tripod Head

This may be the perfect large-format tripod head. My 8X10 is home-built and weighs on the order of 11 pounds, somewhat more than the Manfrotto 410's supposed to be capable of handling. Not an issue. Any of my other heads suffered from "creep:" you'd get the composition correct, tighten the head, and watch the camera slowly tilt or swivel. A geared head completely solves that problem. Best of all, the 410 has a spring-loaded quick-release feature, making it possible to quickly-position the camera and then fine-adjust with gears, and those gears don't creep. If there's a problem with the 410, it's size/weight. This is a long way from an aluminum ball head. Camera, 410, and heavy-duty tripod can total nearly 20 pounds. This isn't for field photography, unless you have a cart. ...

  • Manfrotto 410 geared head -- the good and bad.

Very versatile geared head, essential for architectural photography, and indeed all general purpose photography. Well-made, robust, and on the heavy side, so not ideal for backpacking. The only drawback is that the head uses a proprietary quick release system. I would have been more happy with an Arca-Swiss QR plate, however, the head works for me.

  • Enjoying with pride

Just a quick review, in that I'm finding this gear head to work very very nicely. It does take time if your in a hurry, to first figure out which lever turns the head to which direction, so I'm hoping that will come as time goes by, but the quality is spot on with this product. When on a good tripod, with this head, the camera is steady as can be, even with a long range heavy lens. Exactly what I was hoping for! Thanks!

  • Good quality, well-made but heavy head.

Well made. A little heavy for my purposes, but solid.
