About this product

Product Information

Sidney Poitier--who would later star in such unforgettable films as TO SIR, WITH LOVE; GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER and IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT--won an Academy Award for best actor for his standout performance in this modest, beautiful 1963 film. LILIES OF THE FIELD is directed tenderly and with restraint by Ralph Nelson from a light-handed yet deeply effective screenplay by James Poe, based on a novel by William E. Barrett. Poitier plays the role of Homer Smith, a journeyman laborer, who is roaming the countryside, drifting and working. One day he stops at a farm and meets up with five nuns. Lilia Skala is formidable and endearing as Mother Maria, the highest-ranking sister, who is convinced that God has answered her prayers and sent Homer to fix the roof. Staying and working in the peaceful calm of the Arizona desert, Homer learns more from the nuns than he ever could have anticipated.

I bought this item as a gift for my mom because it fills the whole screen, as opposed to the DVD which is letterbox. Sidney Poitier and the condition and packaging of this item are both equally superb. I highly recommend this moving classic about Homer Smith, and how the leader of a group of nuns plays with his mind just enough to get him to build a chapel for the locals to be able to worship. But where will Homer get the materials? The labor? The bricks? Everything else? That's where Homer's determination and the nuns' blind faith comes in. This movie is both moving and at times, hilarious, and when it's over you'll have its signature "Amen" song stuck in your head for days. I'm personally not really into old black & white classics, but even I have enjoyed this movie many times, ...

  • great movie

it show that you must belive in god and do his work and show that all people should learn to get alone and work together. i also think sidney p. is a very good actor. i fell in love with this movie the frist time i saw it. my children is going to see this movie. they have never heared of the movies. so bought for them to see and to go in my collection of movies. i belive that family need to show this kind of movies and not the kinds they make today. this world is in alot of turmoil and we should all be strong and work together to have a safe place to raise our children and grandchildrrens. this is the ending of time and people aren't going to be ready.i didn't have any dislike about the movie.

  • This movie came in good time and in great condition. Thank you!

I bought this movie for my sister who has never had the pleasure of seeing it. Ihave it in my movie collection but am not willing to give mine up.....even though I really love my sister! I had the distinct honor of meeting Mr. Poitier several years ago, and I can tell you that he is an awesome gentleman in every way!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent title Lilies of the Field

The movie was a 1963 academy awards nomination. I had a copy, but it was played so often I wore it out, so I really had to get another copy. It was an amazing story about 5 nuns and a handyman. The faith of the Mother superior was a lesson to be learned by all of us. Besides, I really identified with this movie because I was in the convent myself as a new sister in the '50s. There was nothing that I disliked about this movie. It was perfect. Amazing the movies that Hollywood produced in the 1960's compared to the garbage that is being shown and produced by Hollywood now.

  • Lilies of the Field

I purchased this because my 86 year old father talked constantly about it. We watched it together one evening and he loved it. I thought that it was a cute movie. Not a lot of plot but entertaining.
