About this product

Product Information

Jim O'Hanlon directs this adaptation of Jane Austen's literary classic chronicling the travails and travails and triumphs of the would-be matchmaker Emma Woodhouse (Romola Garai). Emma's deadly combination of pure intentions and naivety create no small amount of trouble to her friend Harriet, who rejects an appropriate marriage proposal at the behest of Emma, who insists she will be paired with Mr. Elton, a handsome gentleman much higher on the social scale.

    Very pleased with this purchase.

There have been several dramatizations of Jane Austen's Emma. IMO this one is the best. Romola Garai is simply luminous in the role of Emma. DVDs are becoming more and more costly but this video, which was packed in a sturdy jewel case, is -- to me -- definitely worth the price.

  • A wonderful movie, one of Jane Austen's best works brought to life!

This is a wonderful adaption of Austen's classic tale of matchmaking, misunderstandings and mix-ups. Johnny Lee Miller and Romela Garalei do an excellent job starting the movie with characters who behave (and bicker) like the siblings, just as life long friends would, yet they also neatly portray the subtle changes that happen throughout the book as both parties start to view each other in a new way. The death of Emma's mother is shown in the first few minutes, which might surprise or upset some people. But it starts a thought I had never considered, that Emma, Jane and Frank all had similar starts in life with the death of a parent, but their stories took very different turns which impacted the next twenty years. It was an angle I had never considered before. The supporting ...

  • Emma rocks!

Since I'm an avid Jane Austen fan (both books and videos), I watched this "Emma" on PBS when first aired, but didn't buy the DVD at that time. I wanted to wait for the price to come down. I'm glad I waited, because I got a really good price here. Jonny Lee Miller (Mr. Knightley) and Michael Gambon (Emma's father) have been long-time favorite actors of mine. I wasn't familiar with the work of Ramola Garai (Emma), but I thought she was wonderful in the role -- so wonderful, I'm trying to find other movies she's done and buy the DVDs. For Jane Austen fan's I'd consider this DVD a 'must have'. For those not familiar with Austen's works, "Emma" is an excellent introduction to Austen. The script, costumes, ...

  • Excellent adaptation!

This is the best film adaptation of Austen's book "Emma". The acting, costumes, and settings are all magnificent. Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller are by far my favorite Emma and Mr. Knightley. They portray their parts perfectly. Every word and look between the two of them is full of meaning. Also, I appreciate the fact that it is a miniseries, because it provides ample time for the full storyline to take place without many subtractions from the original book.
