Incredibly fun game, even after all these years!
The reason I bought this is because I never owned it personally in the early days of my Nintendo 64 love affair. I always borrowed it from my best friend now and then. Never mind the fact that I could probably have saved up and bought it for myself, the difference with this and other games is that I always borrowed it repeatedly and often. Released at the beginning of the good console's life, Wave Race 64 was a jewel in it's adolescent crown. The graphics; those waves especially. Combined with the wonderful swishing, slooshing, spraying, watery sound effects it was certainly able to immerse me over and over again, and if anything was the foundation of what made this game so good. Also, jet ski racing! Done well. Creating the physics and dynamics needed to properly simulate this activity ... I tend to play this game on single player as my friends and I were never, and still are to this day, multiplayer tuned as it were, but my instincts know this game would have been the cause for many a temporary breakdown in bonds of friendship. It has an excellent learning curve, each difficulty level stepping up the challenge in a satisfying way that makes you curse your own skill and not blaming the game, which is how it should be. The controls are tight, or as tight as they can be when racing on water. It does take a while to get used to the contours of the courses and the sensitivity of turning. Many's a time when I first played this that I wiped out for cutting too sharply. Although I never alter them myself, there is the option to customise racers abilities somewhat. The courses are varied and with the water mechanic you have an excellent challenge in control. For instance, some courses have super-choppy waves that really tests your handling skills, while other calmer courses can challenge you with obstacles and environmental effects. The only thing I can find wrong with the game itself is that yes, admittedly, the game is quite dated in terms of the graphics (although I do maintain the wave graphics still hold up extremely well) but more so pronounced in the music. The intro melody is decidedly cheesy and although a product of the time the game was released, I imagine modern, younger gamers would scoff in derision at it. Also, the commentator who comments on your progress as you race? Well, to say he gets more than a little irritating would be an understatement. It's very hard for me to be objective about a game that represents quite vivid memories and awakes in me such nostalgia. I think I've been fair in this review because Wave Race 64 still remains a very fun game. Blue Storm for me didn't capture the sheer charm Wave Race 64 had, I don't even believe it played as well as Wave Race 64 did which is really bizarre. I think if your are interested in retro gaming and you want to find out about all the fuss people make about the glory days of the Nintendo 64 (I can't be the only one)you'd be pretty silly to miss out on Wave Race 64. A fun, original, extremely playable gem of a racing game.
