I recently bought this DVD because I had worn out the VHS copy a friend gave me. PBS does an excellent job of portraying Seabiscuit's life and the lives of the people who worked with him to make him a star--a source of hope and inspiration during the worst years of The Great Depression. For me, this PBS broadcast is better than the Hollywood movie because it is "truer." Incorporating the words and faces of people who knew the jockeys who rode Seabiscuit, and the words of Seabiscuit's author, Laura Hillenbrand, gave worth and weight to the film. Letting viewers know Red Pollard married his nurse, and hearing his daughter talk of her father's riding and his accidents made Pollard a real person riding a real horse. Hollywood would have done well to watch this presentation before they made their movie. They should have at least included Smith's remark to Pollard as he boosted him onto Seabiscuit for the third try at the Santa Anita: "You know the horse, and the horse knows you. Bring him home." Hats off to PBS for an excellent documentary!Read full review
Three generations of our family has trained thoroughbred racehorses. Two of the grand mothers are both 92 years old, racing horses was a big part of both their lives. I originally saw the documentary of the dynamic Thoroughbred Racehorse Seabiscuit from a rental. I loved the actual story & colorful characters that made up the legendary career of the horse that charmed a nation during the 1930's Depression. I longed to have the two Grandmother's see the documentary & recall memories of their long ago days spent watching their own horses, speed down the home stretch, heading for the finish line. I thought; where can I buy this great documentary? Will I be able to afford two of these DVD's? I immediately thought to check my most favorite online shopping location, ebay! I was once again thrilled to see yes; the movie was for sale on ebay, affordable, easily purchased & delivered right to my home for a Christmas gift to the wise little ladies who still carry fond memories of the part horses played in their lives. Seabiscuit will be enjoyed over & over by the horsemen in our family. Once again in my opinion; truth is way more interesting than fiction or the altered versions of history put together by the movie industry.Read full review

Have really enjoyed being able to see the actual footage of Seabiscuit's life as a race horse. I saw the movie, and enjoyed this video even more because it showed the actual races, the news reels and news papers reports of not only the horse, but also the jockey and his friends and family as well as the owners. Anyone who loves horses would really enjoy this video!
I purchased the American Experience Seabiscuit after I read the book Seabiscuit by Laura Hilderbrand. I wanted to know more about the great race horse. I liked the real life images of Biscuit and seeing him race, but the book had more informaion than this DVD. There was a little information about the people who worked with Seabiscuit, but I would have liked to see more about the owners, trainers, and jockys who worked with Biscuit.
