Visioneer 9420 - a flatbed workhorse with all the bells and whistles !
The visioneer 9420 (w/ 5 buttons)is a real workhorse for any user ; both hardware and software are excellent. I bought this model after my previous Visioneer was "dropped" from the Microsoft HDQL for the transition to Windows XP as "having too many issues with safety" even though it still works perfectly in Win98SE. Regardless, this updated model is thinner, faster, and comes with better software and fills my 3 basic needs with ease: flatbed scanning to printers, 35mm film and slide scanning to digital images, customizable output settings which allow lighter/darker, higher/lower dpi, choice of output device (fax, email attachment, printers, or direct to photo editing software [full version of Archsoft PhotoImpressions], and more). One of the best features is the small real-time preview ... The visioneer 9420 (w/ 5 buttons)is a real workhorse for any user ; both hardware and software are excellent. One of the best features is the small real-time preview window that pops up in the center of my monitor *as* the scan is being done. I can instantly see the positioning, brightness, and progress of the actual scan as it is happening and instantly cancel as needed to make adjustments. However, we all know no product is perfect, and this 9420 is no exception. There are a few issues to be aware of: this company drops models like a hot rock whenever possible - both hardware and software, so check for updates frequently and hope your driver makes the cut to the next version of Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 etc); it most likely won't. Fortunately, a little experimentation will often prove successful and allow you to continue with your present setup into the next generation. For the tech-savy, there's always the option to dual boot. It works, if you know what you're doing. One last caveat is "beware of the size monster." The factory does warn users of creating large files and color depth - they can drag your system to its knees. Trying to scan your basic black & white letter on your stationary just to get the logo's color image in 4800 x 9600 dpi (48 bpp internal color) of an 8.5" x 11" page is really really demanding on your system and will probably cause either a program crash or system freeze (or a scan that takes forever and leaves a huge file). Try using less demanding settings that are already built into the selections. Which brings me to one last criticism : settings. There are just too many for me. Some are under the Email feature, some OCR, some for 'copy' others 'print' and my most used one is 'custom.' You can't go wrong with 'custom' as it allows you to adjust *everything* including an onscreen PhotoImpression's image where I can adjust hue, brightness, contrast, etc. Now that's flexibility ! For us old-schoolers, the price of a unit like the OneTouch 9420 is, well... almost embarrassing. I picked this one up when flatbeds were 'out of style' - a strategy that works wonderfully for me. The sleek 2.5" height, usb connectivity, generous 12" x 20" footprint, and matte grey exterior look fine. Very professional, if i do say so. Would under $20, opened-box, everything included sound unreasonable ? It didn't to me back in 2001 when I picked this one up from someone who wanted a different 'style' of desktop scanner. Thank you again , Maria, for being so nitpickersty. In closing, I urge everyone to look again at Visioneer and just where the 9420 fits in the features list. Once you've gotten everything to work, just leave it, but test it monthly to 'work' the electronics and cycle the strobe. Older gadgets need this to stay 'fit' or they die of old age, strange a it might seem. Use it or lose it.
