Las enfermedades cardiovasculares representan la principal causa de mortalidad en el mundo. 17 millones de personas mueren anualmente por este motivo, siendo la aterosclerosis la principal causa etiologica. Existen evidencias contundentes que relacionan resistencia a la insulina (RI)-hiperinsulinemia con aterosclerosis. El progresivo aumento de la obesidad en los ninos y adultos jovenes, los habitos alimentarios ricos en hidratos de carbonos y grasas, sumados al sedentarismo se han convertido en factores desencadenantes del sindrome de resistencia a la insulina. La deteccion de RI-hiperinsulinemia en edades tempranas de la vida, permitiria mejorar la sensibilidad a la misma implementando medidas higienico dieteticas o utilizando drogas sensibilizantes de la insulina.
