Die doppelte Verkniipfung mit dem Leben - von Lebewesen gebildet, gegen Lebewesen gerichtet -lilEt neue Einblicke in das, was wir naturwissenschaftlich als Leben bezeichnen, erwarten. Diesen Moglichkeiten nachzugehen ist die Aufgabe der vor- liegenden Skizzen. Skizzen, weil es sich urn rasch hingeworfene, vor- lilufige Entwiirfe handelt, die alle Ziige einer person lichen Betrachtungs- weise tragen und keinen Anspruch auf Vollstandigkeit erheben. Die medizinischen Aspekte wurden absichtlich zugunsten der allgemein bio- logischen zuriickgestellt. An Darstellungen der medizinischen Seite der Antibiotica besteht zur Zeit kein Mangel, die allgemein biologische Seite ist bisher eher zu kurz gekommen. Zu groEem Dank fiihle ich mich meinen Teamkollegen Dr. W. KELLER- SCHIERLEIN und Dr. R. HUTTER verpflichtet, die durch ihre Mitarbeit, und ihre stete Bereitschaft auf neue Ideen einzugehen, mitgeholfen haben, den Grundstock zu dies en Skizzen zu legen. Meinen Dank mochte ich auch Prof. B. HUBER von der Universitat Mtinchen aussprechen, er hat mir, durch seine Einladung zu einem Gastsemester an der Universitat Miinchen, ermoglicht, dieses Bandchen zu schreiben.
