A Tale Of Two Stories (All Good)
I bought this on the strength of the excellent comedy serial that was recently on Australian TV. For me it was the best comedy I'd seen from our own shores in many years. The book is however different and has its own road to travel. Fortunately Benjamin Law is a good engaging writer and I generally enjoyed his story of growing up in a family which had the parents separate. The fact they were Chinese didn't come into it although the writer referred to it several times. His Chinese family seemed no different to non Chinese families that I've known over the years. The same hassles and love for one another. It was also interesting how he spoke about growing up gay. This book could have been stereotypical of Chinese and gay youth but it is not. As I said in the beginning this book has its own road to travel and the TV series was different including having different stories to tell and less emphasis on Benjamin being gay. It was more hinted at where in the book it is more direct. I enjoyed the book and found it a worthwhile read and hopefully a second series will be made of the TV show. You don't have to be white to be funny and have interesting and challenging views. The book and the TV series breaks down some barriers or preconceptions that may exist about Asians and being gay.
