The pack of 50 CDs would be a pain in the ass to carry around at work so I uploaded the entire book onto my PSP (around 4 GB to upload). There were two elements in the book Atlas Shrugged I found to be valuable. The first aspect of the book that drew me was that it used fiction to demonstrate the disasters of a dystopia that occurred when reason was forsaken, when the looting incompetent or the mooching lazy manipulate laws or people to take what is unearned all in the name of the greater good, and the evils of controls in the form of "security for all" that will stagnant and constrain a person's freedom, mind and ability. The second point I derived from the story's philosophies was the human spirit that refuses irrational compliance and self sacrifice, and the praise of a man's achievements to move forward, adapt and to grow through self improvement. The motivation that I obtained for myself from this book was that there is no long term joy in doing any kind of work whether it be factory worker or president if your objective were to please others from work or at home without thanks or praise. This value setting, that disregards your level of endurance and skills, is impossible for a daily routine because they will demand more from you. This objective creates the foundation that demands a healthy person to exist to suffer. The rationality of this definition appears as a contradiction to what a healthy person is. A healthy person finds happiness and self preservation an ultimate value. What I found when I was that I lost motivation at most tasks, I began to not care about my mindless routine, and say to myself that it was ok to screw up be lazy as long as I can get away from it. If your objective were to please first yourself, self reliance becomes a virtue and the choice on how you live your day becomes a major factor . You already knowRead full review
This is likely the best story I have ever read. It is intelligent, entertaining, and beautifully written. For any who have ever looked at the world and wondered why so many people seem driven to destroy, to ruin the great accomplishments of those who came before them, and to drag down into the mud any who dare to rise to greatness, this is the story which will finally make it clear. What would happen to the world if the great producers, the idea men and women, the inventors and creators, went on strike? What would happen if those individuals, despised for their capacity for producing wealth by the very people who depend on that wealth's production for survival, suddenly quit? Herein lies the answer. First published in 1957, and written based on observations and logical predictions of the world of that time, this story is frighteningly accurate as a picture of the world as it is today. Many of the extrapolated extremes to which the society of this work of fiction descend have become realities. How far, then, can we really be from fulfilling the rest of what was surely never originally meant to be a work of prophecy?Read full review

The author was way ahead of the times and forsaw the future of the United States as it stands today. Givivg to the have nots who mostly just want something for nothing is exactly whats happening today and tomorrow. I listened to the abridged version and now the unabridged which goes into a whole lot more detail. Both readers are excellent. A very worthwhile book to either read or listen to on audio. Atlas ( the strong ) who couldn't hold up the world anymore and shrugged... Every living person should read it.
Worth every dollar. Well read, complete un-abridged, with a very well done intro. I have two un-abridged versions of Atlas Shrugged audio books, this is as well done and half the price of my first. I also have 3 abridged versions, don't waste your money, buy the un-abridged version. The book has much detail that you can miss and it makes a difference if you miss anything in an Ayn Rand book. So abridged versions just don't cut the mustard. It is a must read/listen too book, and because there is so much detail, with so many messages and although it came out in the 50's it seems to apply today more than ever. This is a book you can read 2 or 3 times, listen to another 2 or 3 times and still find details you missed. If you have ever read it, you need to buy this and hear it! You won't believe how much more detail you will pick up, and how much more fun and informative the book becomes.Read full review
