As a stand alone story, this movie might seem a little dry or uneventful. However, if you are Doctor Who fan, then this is an unexpected treasure. The list of its creators and staff read as a who's who of the original show! Stars *James Warwick* (Earthshock) and *Maurice Roeves* (Caves of Androzani) Directed by *Douglas Camfield* (responsible for many of the most popular episodes... i.e. Web of Fear, The Invasion, Inferno) Screenplay by *Robert Holmes* (the most celebrated original series writer and the mid-70's script editor, the most celebrated years of the original show.) Stuntmen: *Terry Walsh* and *Pat Gorman* Production Assitant: *Graeme Harper* (director of Caves of Androzani and multiple new-series episodes, known for his frenetic, fast-paced style.) Also, this story features several of classic Who's traditional story elements: 1] injecting the bizarre into an everyday setting 2] a quiet British village isolated from the outside world 3] a military force occupies the village ala UNIT 4] scientific procedure & rational thinking allow the Good Guys to catch the Villian. So this is an enjoyable "side project" from all the names that made the original Doctor Who such a popular show. I give this DVD 4/5 stars because it would have been nice to have some extra features. But the story itself is great.Read full review
On the whole I was pleased with the product. It played perfectly, the story was good, I enjoyed the claustrophobic atmosphere of the foggy Scottish island, and the characters were good, with a nice romantic touch. I enjoyed the 'Whoish' elements, the blood-red rolling waves and the snarling of the killer. It was also nice to see James Warwick, who played the dashing Lieutenant Scott in the Doctor Who adventure Earthshock, one of my favourite Dr. Who characters in my favourite Cyberman adventure. My only disappointment was the killer/creature. I was expecting some sort of sea creature or alien; neither turned out to be the case. Even a modified Sea Devil, like in the Blake's 7 adventure Rescue, would have been welcome, especially when I learned that Pat Gorman was playing the part, as he had played such a compelling Sea Devil, haunting the sea fort, in the Jon Pertwee adventure The Sea Devils.Read full review
