I really like how Arslan is neither an overpowered, abilities-come-out-of-nowhere teen hero, nor a bumbling, guts-and-friendship-conquer-all underdog. He's the heir to the throne, and has received an education as such, but he's also an inexperienced 14-year-old. He's kind and would rather make friends, but he's experienced betrayal firsthand and knows the risks. He's aware of both his responsibilities and his shortcomings, and tries to address them. Arslan has several capable adults around him, but instead of being either the token "bumbling adult" that the teen hero has to bail out trouble, or the "aggravated-teacher" who is always having to swoop in and save the underdog, these people not guard, but also genuinely support, guide, and actually teach Arslan to reach his goals, and it's a real treat to watch Arslan gradually grow more confident, implementing what he's learned and taking an increasingly active role in things. To me, Arslan feels like a very genuine and "real" 14-year-old. Would that more series showed protagonists like this!Read full review
