I read this book like 6 years ago that a friend recommended I read before our trip to France, Provence. I returned her copy after the trip, so I wanted to have my own copy so I could read it again to bring back memories of the trip. Cant wait to read it again to be taken back, again. Fun read.

Enjoyable read. It made me feel like I was living in Provence along with the author. He has a great way of telling tales to bring them to life.

Always charming and at times hilarious, Peter Mayle invites us into his life in Southern, rural France to experience the local culture and the idiosyncrasies of the colorful people. I loved this book and will soon start on the sequel Encore Provence. Hopefully, it will be as good.

A year in provence is an amazing book all about discovering the small-town traditions and customs of living in provence. This book is not to be read on an empty stomach!! The detailed menu of each meal is enough to make a person crave for a sandwich au fromage. Every character is so vivid and has their own way of approaching a problem, like how to move a large marble table 40 ft. I have studied french for over 7 years and i was starting to get bored with everything. Then i read my mom's old copy of this book one summer and i was revived. I wanted to go every resturant that mayle wrote about and try my luck hunting for truffles or go searching for the house that mayle lived in. I highly recommend this book for the starving reading that wants a book that really sticks to the bones. Bon appetit!Read full review
I was interested to read this world famous book, famous in the English speaking world, as I am French I never heard of it in France. However, it is well written and it is very amusing. I am afraid that anybody wishing to settle in France will find it not as sweet as it let's the reader imagine but it gives a glimpse of France famous south region and some tradition. I would be interested to learn what the writter now are thinking of France since the book has been written in 1988.
Peter Mayle allows us to vicariously experience living with the French in the Provence region of France. He shares his funny and touching experiences with affection and humor as he paints word portraits of the people of the region. I read this as my husband and I were preparing to move to France, and it gave me both courage and an attitude of adventure. I recommend this book as good entertainment, and slightly educational as well.
