Great design, with possible quality control issues
First the bad news: Fujifilm has not been very careful with quality control. I can attest that it is possible to get a dud; I am now on my second F770EXR, as the first one had a very difficult time focusing. Sometimes it just wouldn't seem to try; it would flash "!AF" on the LED screen until I would power-cycle the camera once or twice. Then it would behave better for a while, but even then, the pictures were never very sharp. That camera was purchased new, and neither it nor the box it came in showed any kind of shipping damage. BUT. When I exchanged that for another of the same model, I got one that "must have been built on a Wednesday" as they used to say in Detroit. What a difference: reliable, quick focusing, and tack-sharp pictures. When you get one that is free from factory ... First the bad news: Fujifilm has not been very careful with quality control. What a difference: reliable, quick focusing, and tack-sharp pictures. When you get one that is free from factory defects, you have a gem on your hands. My three favorite features: (1) EXR sensor and logic. Scenes with a wide range of brightness are captured with a lot of detail. The camera seems very intelligent about how to expose different scenes. You have full PASM control if you want it, but with the dial set to either Auto or EXR, it just tends to get everything right with clockwork regularity. (2) GPS. I like to wander the countryside taking pictures, and in the past have had to keep a notebook with me to record where I found various things. This does the work for me, recording all picture locations to within a few feet of accuracy. The menu offers a choice of whether to keep contact with GPS satellites at all times or only when the camera is on; I chose the latter because it saves batteries. It usually takes the camera less than a minute to find its location when you power the camera on, and I usually need at least that long to compose my shots anyway. GPS will also be an invaluable feature when I go to Europe next summer with my wife. Location info can be stamped onto the photos themselves, but I prefer to leave that feature off. The coordinates are saved invisibly in the EXIF metadata, where they are interpreted correctly by most photo-sharing services on the Web (like Ipernity and Flickr) and in numerous other viewing contexts. (3) 3D mode. I've really become hooked on this. Take a pair pictures with the camera in slightly different positions horizontally, and later on your computer, do some aligning and then reverse them so the left picture is on the right and vice-versa. If you cross your eyes when looking at the pair, you get a spookily realistic depth effect. (There are other ways to present 3D content, but this is my personal favorite because it requires no glasses or special hardware.) While it's possible to do shoot 3D image pairs with any camera, Fuji's 3D mode assists you by overlaying the previous image on the one you are currently taking so you get the alignment approximately correct from the start and don't have to crop very much later. Also during playback on the camera's screen, it will show your 3d pairs in alternating "wigglegram" format, which you quickly learn to mentally translate to 3D so you know if you will have a good result or should shoot again. It's a great creative tool. Besides the quality control issues, the only other thing you might need to be aware of is that the lens is rather flare-prone. Since there's no way to attach any kind of hood, it's sometimes necessary to get in shade when shooting in bright sunlight, but this is often true of compact cameras.
