Lucio Fulci's gore masterpiece on Blu-Ray is a welcome addition, not since the Roan Laser Disc restoration has the film really shown its colors in a vibrant eye popping way. Zombie is the story of Ann trying to locate her father in the Antilles where on that Island Zombies are coming back to life to eat the living, all this with the prologue of a boat showing up in New York waters and a cop getting killed by the zombie on board (played by Capt. Haggerty who was a stunt man and dog trainer providing animals for films - including Fulci's NY Ripper when the golden retriever comes back with a hand in it's mouth and initially supplying David Letterman with the first dogs for Stupid Pet Tricks). Said boat turns out to be Ann's fathers and she meets up with a journalist Peter West and they eventually make it to the Antilles and meet up with a couple on a boat who allow them to charter the right their boat so the can find the Island of Matool. This film is filled with over the top gore and the infamous shark scene (where a zombie under water fights and tries to eat a shark). The Blu-Ray comes with the soundtrack in original mono, 5.1 and 7.1 mixes in English and Italian (with subtitles for the hearing impaired AND the corrected subtitles for the Italian language track, good to see what was in the original script at some parts if minor, like knowing Dr. Menards wife is named Paula). The extra's are good, what was on the Anchor Bay release with some new things, the only draw back is they did not get the extra's used in the Shriek Show video release (Blue Underground used to do all the behind the scenes stuff for Anchor Bay so not sure if they are part of the same company, most horror titles from Anchor Bay are under the Blue Underground title, or an agreement with the Shriek Show people could not be met. The Shriek Show edition has all the cool Capt. Haggerty stuff on it). Either way, get this for your collection if you like Fulci, Italian knock off zombie films coming in on the coat tails of Romero's Dawn of the Dead (Called Zombi: Dawn of the Dead in Italy and that is why this is known as Zombi 2 in Italy as the 'unofficial' sequel), or just a gore hound, it is fun for all who like this. *WARNING* Aside from the graphic violence, this may may make you want to seek the other films by Fulci out in his zombie world, THE BEYOND, House By The Cemetery and City of the Living Dead (AKA Gates of Hell).Read full review
